Osaka soars into US Open Third Round

Naomi Osaka cruises past Hailey Baptiste 6-3, 6-1, advancing to the US Open third round with a dominant performance.

“I was really stressed the entire time...”

Naomi Osaka advanced to the US Open third round with a dominant 6-3, 6-1 win over Hailey Baptiste, showcasing her powerful forehand and strategic play. This marks her first time reaching the third round at Flushing Meadows since 2021. Osaka's impressive performance sets her up for a meeting with either 15th seed Daria Kasatkina or Kamilla Rakhimova.

“I was just really trying to focus and not give her any free points and just be positive,” Osaka said after the match, highlighting her approach to the game. She wore a sparkling purple outfit and brought her Labubu charm, nicknamed “Arthur Flash,” to the court as a tribute to tennis legend Arthur Ashe.

Naomi Osaka showcased glimpses of her top form, reminiscent of her Montreal final run, as she overcame Hailey Baptiste. After trading early breaks, Osaka's powerful forehand proved decisive, allowing her to break Baptiste in the sixth game and take control of the match.

Baptiste briefly took the initiative in the second set, capitalizing on Osaka's double fault on break point to take the opening game. However, Osaka quickly regained her footing, breaking Baptiste in the fifth game after a faulty first serve gave her the opportunity. This set the stage for Osaka's dominant performance, ultimately securing the win.

The crowd's enthusiasm dampened as Hailey Baptiste served a double fault on match point, sealing her fate. Naomi Osaka, who had previously defeated Baptiste in the Miami third round, celebrated her win with restraint, acknowledging the home crowd's disappointment.

“I was really stressed the entire time,” said Osaka, who hit 13 winners and four aces. “I'm really excited to be moving better.”
