Liverpool teammates, including club captain Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, gathered in Diogo Jota's hometown of Gondomar, Portugal, to pay their respects at his funeral. The players, along with manager Arne Slot, attended the service to mourn the loss of the striker, who died in a car crash on Thursday alongside his brother, Andre Silva. A red floral wreath bearing Jota's shirt number was carried by his teammates as a tribute.
Liverpool players carried two red floral tributes into the chapel, each shaped like a shirt. One wreath, carried by Virgil van Dijk, featured Jota's number 20 in white flowers, while the other bore his brother's number 30, a poignant tribute to the two siblings.
With heads bowed and dressed in black, Diogo Jota's Liverpool teammates entered the church in somber silence. The only audible sound came from the crowd outside, who applauded in tribute. Jota's widow, Rute Cardoso, accompanied by relatives, also attended the service, just weeks after marrying the striker in a heartfelt union.

Hundreds of Gondomar residents gathered outside the church to pay their respects to Jota, who grew up in the small northern Portuguese town. The private service was led by Bishop Manuel Linda of Porto, who delivered an emotional homily. Addressing Jota's family, including his parents, wife, and three young children, Linda said, “Solidarity in love is always stronger than death.”

Portugal national teammates Bernardo Silva and Bruno Fernandes, both Premier League stars, were also in attendance at the service, paying their respects to Diogo Jota.
“Jota will always be in our hearts. He will always be present at every breakfast, lunch, dinner, at all our national team get-togethers, at our PlayStation games, at our card games,” Silva told Portuguese broadcaster TVI.
The news of Diogo Jota's death at 28 shocked the soccer world and beyond, prompting an outpouring of condolences from leaders and fellow athletes. At Liverpool's Anfield Stadium, fans continued to pay tribute, laying flowers and other tokens of remembrance for the beloved striker.
The fatal car crash occurred when the brothers' Lamborghini veered off the road and burst into flames while they were believed to be driving to a ferry in Spain to travel to Britain. Authorities suspect a tyre blowout may have contributed to the tragic accident, which happened after midnight on Thursday.
🚨 Liverpool have decided to pay the remaining two years of Diogo Jota's contract to his family. ❤️❤️
