SE Palmeiras secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup by defeating Botafogo FR 1-0 in extra time. The match, played in Philadelphia, marked Botafogo's eighth consecutive loss with that scoreline. The game had a derby atmosphere, with both Brazilian teams exchanging heavy challenges from the start.

Palmeiras initially posed a greater threat, with Vitor Roque narrowly missing Joaquín Piquerez's through ball, and other half-chances going begging. The match was physical, with hard tackles and yellow cards aplenty after the cooling break, but few clear scoring opportunities emerged before the interval.

The game picked up pace in first-half stoppage time, but it was after the break that the action really intensified. Palmeiras' young star Estêvão burst into life, testing the Botafogo goalkeeper John twice before having his third effort ruled out for offside.

Botafogo remained unfazed in the face of that pressure, and they gradually began to play out and finally cause trouble at the other end, with Jefferson Savarino firing over.

But Palmeiras produced the best chance so far with just over 15 minutes to play, as John acrobatically tipped over Maurício’s close-range header.

Botafogo remained composed under pressure and gradually started to create chances, with Jefferson Savarino firing a shot over the bar. Palmeiras, however, created the best opportunity of the match with about 15 minutes left, when John made an acrobatic save to tip Maurício's close-range header over the bar.

That was it for action in normal time, meaning Botafogo completed a seventh 90 minutes out of their last nine with one or fewer total goals scored.

The reasons for that became clear as the Rio de Janeiro side started ET well but created little of note in the final third, while Palmeiras continued to get their shots away, including when Richard Ríos fired on target from distance.

Palmeiras' direct approach paid off in extra time, as substitute Paulinho turned past Marlon Freitas and scored the opening goal, slotting it into the far corner 10 minutes into the extension.

The green and white end of the Lincoln Financial Field erupted in response, and didn’t lose their voice as their opponents searched for an equaliser.

Palmeiras skipper Gustavo Gómez made things tricky when he was shown a second yellow for hauling down Alexander Barboza with four minutes to go, but Botafogo failed to take advantage as time ultimately ran out.

Palmeiras advances to the quarterfinals after topping Group A and will await the winner of Benfica vs Chelsea. Botafogo, despite beating Palmeiras in the 2024 Copa Libertadores final, exits the tournament and can now focus on defending their Brazilian Série A title.
