French Open: Madison Keys Beats Hailey Baptiste in Round 4

Madison Keys defeats Hailey Baptiste 6-3, 7-5 in the French Open fourth round, advancing to the quarterfinals. Find out what's next for the American tennis star.

Madison Keys fought off a spirited challenge from fellow American Hailey Baptiste, securing her spot in the French Open quarterfinals with a 6-3, 7-5 win at Roland Garros on Monday. This sets up an exciting matchup with second-seeded Coco Gauff, marking Keys' third appearance in the last eight in Paris.

The seventh-seeded Keys dominated the opening set, but Baptiste pushed her to the limit in the second set. Baptiste broke for 3-1, and Keys had to dig deep to come back, even facing two set points when the 10th game went to deuce. Keys' experience and skill ultimately paid off, earning her a spot among the top eight at Roland Garros for the first time since 2019.

With this win, Keys extends her winning streak in Grand Slam matches to 11 and is now one step closer to achieving a rare feat: winning both the Australian Open and French Open in the same year. Only five women have accomplished this: Margaret Court, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Jennifer Capriati, and Serena Williams. Keys' victory over Baptiste marks their third consecutive meeting, with Keys now leading their head-to-head 3-1.

Madison Keys outlasted her friend and fellow American Hailey Baptiste, securing a spot in the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 7-5 win. This sets up a meeting with second-seeded Coco Gauff in the next round, guaranteeing an American presence in the semifinals.

“Hailey is such an amazing player,” Keys said. “It was such a tough second set. Today I just had to kind of make as many balls as possible.” Baptiste pushed Keys to her limits, particularly in the second set where she broke for 3-1, but Keys' experience and determination ultimately paid off.

Keys received support from notable figures in American tennis, including new US Billie Jean King Cup captain Lindsay Davenport, her former coach, and 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens, who is currently sidelined due to injury. Despite the challenging match, Keys' win advances her in the tournament, setting the stage for her upcoming match against Gauff.

Madison Keys expressed her gratitude towards her fellow American players, saying, “We've a lot of really great players constantly helping us, inspiring us, and if we have any questions, they're of great help. It's great being friends with such amazing players.” She was surrounded by supportive peers, including new U.S. Billie Jean King Cup captain Lindsay Davenport and injured player Sloane Stephens, who were watching from the stands during her match against Hailey Baptiste.

Keys knows she'll face a tough challenge against second-seeded Coco Gauff, an expert on clay, in the quarterfinals. Despite having only one clay court title, Keys is determined to take risks and reach the semifinals in Paris for the second time, following her 2018 semifinal appearance. “At the Australian Open, I was really brave to go after my shots, that's how I play my best tennis. Sometimes it is hard, but usually it pays off,” she added, hinting at the approach she might take against Gauff.
