Julen Lopetegui has been officially appointed as the new head coach of the Qatar national football team, replacing Luis García. The 58-year-old Spanish coach signed a contract extending until 2027, which was formalized at the Qatar Football Association headquarters in Al Bidda Tower.


Lopetegui's first challenge as Qatar's head coach will be guiding the national squad in the remaining 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He'll make his debut on June 5, 2025, in a home match against Iran at Al Sadd Club's Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, followed by an away fixture against Uzbekistan on June 10, 2025. With his wealth of experience, Lopetegui aims to make a significant impact on the team.
