EPL: Fulham Stay in European Race with 3-2 Win at Brentford

Fulham's 3-2 victory over Brentford keeps their UEFA Conference League hopes alive, with four teams still in contention for the final spot.

Fulham defeated Brentford 3-2 in a thrilling Premier League match at the Gtech Community Stadium, keeping their European hopes alive. The first half was action-packed, with Brentford's Yoane Wissa having an early chance thwarted by a smart save from Bernd Leno. Mikkel Damsgaard had set up the opportunity with a well-placed pass.

The win keeps Fulham in contention for a top-eight finish and a potential UEFA Conference League spot, while Brentford's European aspirations took a hit.

Fulham took the lead after 16 minutes when Raul Jimenez rose above Nathan Collins to head home Adama Traore's looping cross, which had been deflected. However, Brentford quickly responded, with Bryan Mbeumo sending a set-piece delivery whizzing across the goalmouth.

Just moments later, Mbeumo made amends, scoring himself with a low shot into the bottom corner, equalizing for Brentford.

Brentford had a chance to take the lead just six minutes later when Kevin Schade was fouled by Joachim Andersen in the penalty area. Bryan Mbeumo, who has been linked with a potential transfer, took responsibility for the spot-kick. However, the PL Player of the Season nominee saw his penalty saved by Bernd Leno, who got a strong hand to the ball.

Despite the penalty miss, Brentford went into halftime with the lead. A long throw from Michael Kayode caused chaos, and Christian Nørgaard headed the ball goalwards after a slight touch from Yoane Wissa on the goal line.

After dropping a league-high 28 points from winning positions, Marco Silva's team faced a familiar scenario as they trailed at halftime. However, the high-intensity match showed no signs of slowing down, and Fulham soon took control.

Fulham turned the game around for the second time, scoring two goals within three minutes to take the lead.

Fulham equalized when club captain Tom Cairney headed home another deflected cross. The visitors then took the lead when substitute Harry Wilson scored with a swerving strike from distance, capitalizing on Brentford's momentum.

The match remained intense until the final whistle, with Christian Nørgaard having a late opportunity to equalize for Brentford, but Bernd Leno was up to the task. In the end, Fulham's 3-2 win kept their European hopes alive, moving them to within a point of Brentford and leaving four teams still in contention.

Despite the result, Thomas Frank’s side remain eighth, with qualification still possible for whoever ends up in that position next Sunday, depending on Chelsea’s success in Europe amongst other factors.

However, failure to extend their winning streak to five PL games – their longest top-flight streak since 1939 – means that they could drop as low as 10th by the time the final round of fixtures come around.
