Barry Ferguson to Leave Rangers After Interim Stint

Rangers announce Barry Ferguson's exit and begin search for a new manager, with potential candidates like Davide Ancelotti being considered.

Rangers Football Club announced that Barry Ferguson will not continue as manager beyond the current season. Ferguson took over as interim manager in February after Philippe Clement was sacked and led the team for the remainder of the season.

The club is now expected to intensify its search for a permanent manager, with Ferguson's departure paving the way for a new appointment. Ferguson, a former Rangers captain, played a key role in stabilizing the team during his interim tenure.

During his tenure as interim manager, Barry Ferguson led Rangers to notable victories, including wins over Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce in the Europa League and a triumph away at Celtic. However, the team's league performance was less impressive, winning just six of 15 matches and finishing 17 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

Reflecting on his experience, Ferguson expressed gratitude for the opportunity. “I've already lived the dream as a player and as captain of Rangers and to do so as head coach in these last three months has been an enormous honour for me,” he said. “There have been some ups and downs, but I have loved this experience and given it my all throughout.”

Rangers CEO Patrick Stewart reported that the club's search for a new head coach is advancing positively. One potential candidate rumored to be in the mix is Davide Ancelotti, son of Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti. Davide Ancelotti has experience as a coach under his father but would be taking on a managerial role for the first time if appointed.
