PSV Captain Luuk de Jong Calls Title Win 'Bizarre' After Dramatic Comeback
PSV captain Luuk de Jong reacts to his team's title win, calling it 'bizarre' after Ajax's late-season collapse.
PSV captain Luuk de Jong expressed astonishment over PSV's title win, describing it as “bizarre.” The team staged a remarkable comeback in the final weeks of the season, capitalizing on Ajax's collapse. Ajax had squandered a 9-point lead with just five games left, managing only one win in that period.

“It’s a bizarre championship. We had already given up hope,” De Jong said in a post-match interview with ESPN. “I had already indicated in interviews that we will spend the rest of our lives regretting not becoming champions.”
Luuk de Jong played a crucial role in PSV's 3-1 win over Sparta Rotterdam, scoring the 2-1 goal after Sparta equalized through Gjivai Zechiel. “It got tense for a while, didn’t it? In the first half, there was nothing wrong, then they score the 1-1, and you think, ‘It won’t be that kind of day, will it?’” De Jong reflected on the match's tense moments.
De Jong continued, “We just played well, but then you still have to go and score that goal. At 1-3, you know it’s in the bag.” The win marked a significant achievement for PSV, and De Jong became the team's top scorer with 14 goals in the Eredivisie season.
However, De Jong's future at PSV remains uncertain, as his contract expires this summer. “We still have to discuss that with the club. We are going to celebrate hard first," he said, prioritizing the celebration over contract talks.
