Ajax Ends Season on High Note Despite Missing Title
Ajax wins 2-0 against FC Twente in their final Eredivisie match but misses out on the league title despite a strong performance.
Ajax ended the Eredivisie season on a high note with a 2-0 win over FC Twente, securing second place in the league table. The Amsterdam side started the match with purpose, showcasing a tempo and dynamic play that was a welcome sight after recent performances. With five new faces in the starting lineup, Ajax created several chances in the final third, with Brian Brobbey and Kenneth Taylor heavily involved in the attack. Despite their efforts, it took some time for Ajax to find the breakthrough.
The match's first significant opportunity fell to FC Twente when Ricky van Wolfswinkel headed the ball towards Remko Pasveer's goal. However, the 41-year-old goalkeeper made an outstanding save to deny Twente the opening goal, keeping the score goalless. FC Twente briefly seized the initiative, but Ajax soon regained control of the game.
Ajax's dominance eventually paid off when they took the lead after 28 minutes. Captain Jordan Henderson scored his first Eredivisie goal, heading home from Youri Regeer's free-kick, giving the home side the advantage.
Ajax's lead could have been doubled when Mees Hilgers lost possession deep in his own half, but Steven Berghuis failed to capitalize on the resulting counter-attack. Brian Brobbey laid the ball off to Berghuis, who found himself one-on-one with Przemyslaw Tyton, but the winger couldn't finish with his weaker right foot.

The atmosphere at the Johan Cruyff ArenA shifted dramatically after the start of the second half when news broke that Sparta Rotterdam had equalized against PSV, a result that would have handed Ajax the Eredivisie title.
The home crowd erupted in anticipation, and their excitement grew when substitute Wout Weghorst scored what appeared to be the second goal, striking the ball past the near post. However, the VAR intervened and canceled the goal due to offside, much to the frustration of the Ajax players and fans.
The disappointment for Ajax fans deepened when news arrived that PSV had taken the lead against Sparta, courtesy of Luuk de Jong's goal, making it 2-1 in PSV's favor. Meanwhile, on the pitch, FC Twente created several chances in the final 20 minutes, with Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Michel Vlap coming close to scoring an equalizer. However, it was Ajax who sealed the win with a second goal, scored by Wout Weghorst in injury time.
Despite the 2-0 victory over FC Twente, Ajax ultimately fell short of securing the Eredivisie title. The Amsterdam side had once held a 9-point lead but squandered it in the final weeks of the season, finishing in second place. PSV's win over Sparta confirmed Ajax's fate, leaving them to ponder what could have been.
