McIlroy Wins Masters, Completes Career Grand Slam

Rory McIlroy wins the Masters Tournament, completing his career grand slam and cementing his legacy as one of golf's greatest players.

Rory McIlroy made history by becoming the first European men's player to complete a career grand slam, winning the Masters on Sunday. The 35-year-old Northern Irishman sealed his victory with a birdie on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff against Justin Rose.

McIlroy's win completes a set of major victories, following his earlier wins at the US Open (2011), PGA Championship (2012, 2014), and Open Championship (2014). Sky Sports pundit and renowned coach Butch Harmon praised McIlroy's performance, saying, “I think we saw one of the greatest days in golf we will ever see. It had an ebb and flow that a Hollywood producer could not have come up with. If you wrote a script like this, they would say it wasn't believable.”

Harmon further praised McIlroy's resilience and determination, stating, “He was like a gladiator in the way he came back. Did he quit? No. Did he hang his head? No. Did he feel sorry for himself? No. Now he has a Green Jacket.” Harmon, who has known McIlroy since he was 16, added, “I've known Rory since he was 16, done a little work with him at times, and this is one of the most amazing victories I have ever seen.”

Rory McIlroy has joined an elite group of golfers by completing the career grand slam, becoming the sixth man in history to achieve this feat. He joins legendary golfers Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods.

The Belfast Telegraph captured the excitement back home with a headline that read, “Putting man on the moon? What Rory McIlroy has just achieved is statistically even more impressive.” The newspaper hailed McIlroy as not only the greatest sports person Northern Ireland has ever produced but also one of the greatest in the world.

The Belfast Telegraph further praised McIlroy, saying, “He has the Green Jacket and grand slam to prove it. Rory Daniel McIlroy, you are something else.” This tribute reflects the admiration and awe for McIlroy's incredible achievement.

The British media celebrated Rory McIlroy's Masters win with enthusiasm. The Daily Mail's front page headline read, “Master of his Universe,” while The Telegraph declared, “The boy from Holywood finally gets his Hollywood ending.” These headlines reflect the excitement and admiration for McIlroy's historic victory.

The BBC highlighted McIlroy's mental strength and personal growth, noting how working with psychologist Bob Rotella influenced him. The story, “How coping with 'heartbreak' changed everything for McIlroy,” explored McIlroy's journey 11 years after his last major win and 14 years since his heartbreaking loss at the 2011 Masters.

The Telegraph praised McIlroy's resilience and skill, saying, “Resilience feels inadequate,” as he overcame adversity to win. The newspaper noted that McIlroy “conjured golf from the gods” with his remarkable iron shots at the 15th, 17th, and 18th holes, which were crucial in securing his victory.

Faldo and Nicklaus Praise McIlroy's Achievement

Nick Faldo hailed Rory McIlroy as a “legend”after his Masters victory, saying it surpassed Tiger Woods' 2019 win. “When Tiger won here in 2019 (his first major in 11 years), I said that scene would never be topped but I was wrong,” Faldo said. “For a man to do that after what he went through for 11 years - Rory is a legend now. He is 35 years old and a legend. How about that? It is a remarkable achievement.” Meanwhile, six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus phoned the CBS post-Masters telecast to congratulate McIlroy after his playoff win over Justin Rose.

Six-time Masters champion Jack Nicklaus expressed his joy for Rory McIlroy's victory, saying, “I'm so happy for him. I'm delighted for him.” Nicklaus believes McIlroy's win will bring him relief and lead to more outstanding golf, stating, “It'll take the world off his shoulders and you're now going to see a lot more of really good golf out of Rory McIlroy.”

The US media celebrated McIlroy's win with notable headlines. The Washington Post ran with “Ain't Life Grand,” while USA Today featured McIlroy's triumph on its homepage, just below a story about US President Donald Trump's approval ratings falling according to a CBS poll.

US President Donald Trump, an avid golfer himself, congratulated Rory McIlroy on his Masters Tournament win, praising his remarkable display of courage and resilience. “That took tremendous courage. He was having a hard time, but it showed great guts and stamina and courage,” Trump said aboard Air Force One. The President further emphasized the difficulty of McIlroy's comeback, stating, “People have no idea how tough that is. He came back. It's better for him that it happened that way because that showed real courage to have come back from what could've been a tragedy – it was amazing.” Trump's praise for McIlroy comes after the golfer's thrilling playoff win against Justin Rose, marking his first Masters title and completing his career grand slam.
