Harris and Jewell Make Strong Cases for WTC Final Selection
Australian batsmen Marcus Harris and Caleb Jewell shine in the County Championship, making strong cases for WTC final selection.
Marcus Harris has made a compelling case for his inclusion in Australia's Ashes lineup with a season-opening century. With the Australian team yet to decide on Usman Khawaja's opening partner for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa in June, Harris's runs in the County Championship could prove valuable. The 32-year-old's last Test appearance was in the 2021/22 Ashes, where he struggled with technical flaws and deficiencies, but he has continued to score runs in domestic cricket.
Harris's form has been inconsistent in recent seasons, but his latest performance could spark a recall to the Australian team. After scoring 601 runs in the 2022/23 Sheffield Shield at an average of nearly 40, Harris's form dipped, and he fell out of favor. However, with the emergence of younger players like Sam Konstas, Harris's experience and runs could make him a strong contender for a spot in the Australian lineup. His technical flaws, which were criticized during his previous Test appearances, may have been addressed, and he could be a viable option for the upcoming Ashes series.

Marcus Harris's century for Lancashire against Middlesex at Lord's has put him back in contention for a spot in the Australian team for the World Test Championship (WTC) final in June. Despite Sam Konstas being awarded his first Cricket Australia central contract, Australia head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that there is still an open position at the top of the order alongside Usman Khawaja. Harris's 138, which included 21 boundaries, was scored at number four, but it could still be a significant factor in the selection process.
Harris's century could also put pressure on Marnus Labuschagne, who has been out of form, to score heavily in his upcoming stint with Glamorgan. Labuschagne is set to begin his stint with Glamorgan after his mandated rest period, and the expectation will be on him to perform well. Meanwhile, Harris's Australian teammate Caleb Jewell has also been in good form, scoring a pair of fifties for Derbyshire in a comfortable nine-wicket win over Gloucestershire. Jewell's scores of 61 and 51 will have caught the attention of selectors, and he could be another contender for a spot in the Australian team.
Wow.
