Emma Raducanu Withdraws from Billie Jean King Cup Qualifiers to Focus on Fitness
Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Germany to focus on her fitness and well-being.
British tennis star Emma Raducanu has made the decision to pull out of next week's Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Germany. Raducanu's withdrawal is aimed at allowing her to rest and recover after a grueling run to the quarter-finals in Miami.
Raducanu's Miami Open campaign ended with a defeat at the hands of Jessica Pegula, a match in which she required medical attention. During the match, Raducanu dropped the opening set and appeared to be struggling physically while up 5-4 in the second. She took a medical timeout, during which her legs and back were iced, but ultimately lost the match 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.
The 22-year-old's decision to withdraw from the Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers is likely a precautionary measure to ensure she prioritizes her physical well-being. By taking the time to rest and recover, Raducanu aims to avoid exacerbating any potential injuries and return to competition at full strength.
Emma Raducanu has decided to withdraw from Britain's Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers against the Netherlands and Germany, scheduled to take place in The Hague, Netherlands from April 10-12. This decision comes after a packed schedule of seven tournaments in the first three months of the year, and Raducanu's representatives have stated that she needs some time to focus on her physical well-being.
According to Raducanu's representatives, she will also be skipping the Rouen Open, which is set to take place from April 14. “She needs a little space in the calendar to best look after her body,” they explained to British media. This decision is likely a precautionary measure, given Raducanu's history of form and fitness issues since her US Open victory in 2021.

Despite her struggles, Raducanu showed promising signs in Miami last week, where she won four consecutive main draw matches, her best run since the US Open. However, she has opted to prioritize her physical health and take a break from competition. Britain's captain Anne Keothavong acknowledged that Raducanu's absence will be felt, saying, “You always miss a player of her quality on the team.”
Keothavong has named a strong squad to face the Netherlands and Germany, including Katie Boulter, Sonay Kartal, Harriet Dart, and Olivia Nicholls. While Raducanu's withdrawal is a blow, the team will be looking to build on their semi-final appearance last year and make a strong showing in the qualifiers.
