Grealish Dedicates Goal to Late Brother as Man City Beat Leicester
Jack Grealish scored his first Premier League goal in 16 months as Manchester City beat Leicester 2-0, dedicating the strike to his late brother on the 25th anniversary of his passing.
Manchester City midfielder Jack Grealish scored a poignant goal in his team's 2-0 win over Leicester on Wednesday, dedicating it to his late brother Keelan. Grealish's close-range strike in the second minute at the Etihad Stadium was his first Premier League goal in 16 months.
The goal held special significance for Grealish, as it came on the 25th anniversary of his brother's passing. Keelan Grealish died at just nine months old, and the date remains a difficult one for the Grealish family. “This day is always hard in the family, but I was happy to score,” Grealish said, reflecting on the emotional significance of his goal.
Grealish's performance against Leicester was a welcome return to form for the 29-year-old England winger. He marked his first league start since last December by helping City move back into fourth place in the Premier League, as they chase Champions League qualification. The victory was a much-needed boost for Manchester City, who have endured a dismal season.
Grealish has faced challenges this season, struggling with fitness and form issues that have limited his playing time. He has been overshadowed by teammates Jeremy Doku, Phil Foden, and Savinho, but his goal against Leicester will hopefully mark a turning point in his season. Grealish's emotional response to his goal highlighted the personal significance of the moment, with his parents in attendance at the Etihad Stadium. “My mum and dad were here. This day is always difficult in the family. So to score and to win was brilliant,” he said.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been impressed with Jack Grealish's handling of his recent issues, including his limited playing time. “Jack is an incredible human being in terms of gestures and he's incredibly generous,” Guardiola said, highlighting Grealish's positive attitude. Guardiola also acknowledged the personal significance of Grealish's goal, which came on the 25th anniversary of his brother's passing. “I didn't know that. I can't imagine how tough it was but to be with his mum and dad, his sister and all the family, it's good.”

Guardiola was pleased with Grealish's performance against Leicester, which included a goal and a good overall game. “He scored a goal and made a good game. I'm happy for him. I know it's not easy when you don't play quite regularly,” Guardiola said. Omar Marmoush added the second goal for City after 29 minutes, and the team eased through the remainder of the game to secure a 2-0 win.

The victory pushed Leicester, who remain 12 points from safety, closer to relegation. Guardiola acknowledged that the game was not easy, with Leicester defending deeply and City missing opportunities to score a third goal. “It wasn't easy with 10 players behind the ball in the box and we missed the third goal to be more relaxed,” Guardiola said. However, he was pleased with his team's performance, noting that they did not concede any goals until near the end of the game. “But we didn't concede anything until near the end and I'm pleased for a good performance.”
Guardiola also provided an update on the injury status of Erling Haaland, who suffered an ankle injury in Sunday's FA Cup quarter-final win at Bournemouth. Haaland has since received specialist treatment from Dr. Ramon Cugat in Barcelona, and Guardiola expects him to be out for five to six weeks. “He saw him and we expect five to six weeks,” Guardiola said, providing clarity on the length of Haaland's absence.
