UCL: Liverpool Stun PSG with Late Goal, End Hosts' 22-Game Unbeaten Run

Liverpool stunned PSG with a 1-0 win in the first leg of their Champions League Round of 16 tie, ending the hosts' 22-game unbeaten run and 20-match scoring streak.

Liverpool secured a thrilling 1-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie, thanks to a stellar performance from Alisson Becker and a late winner from substitute Harvey Elliott. This hard-fought win also marked Liverpool's first away victory in France in five attempts.

The encounter pitted two teams against each other, both of whom have established a commanding 13-point lead in their respective domestic leagues. Given their impressive form, it was anticipated that the margin between them in this European clash would be extremely narrow.

PSG started the match on the front foot, with Ibrahima Konaté blocking Bradley Barcola's attempt and Fabián Ruiz sending the follow-up wide within the opening 15 minutes. Ousmane Dembele then led a charge up the pitch, picking out João Neves for a shot that bounced off the turf and over the crossbar. Dembele's own shot was deflected behind by Virgil van Dijk shortly after.

The ensuing corner was not convincingly cleared, and the ball was worked to Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who was denied a stunning opener by a marginal offside call. Achraf Hakimi and Kvaratskhelia each had strikes from range saved as PSG continued to dominate the visitors. The sense of disbelief that the game remained goalless only intensified on the half-hour mark, as Alisson rushed out to halt Dembele. Barcola then had one shot blocked by Dominik Szoboszlai and sent another over the crossbar, leaving PSG frustrated but still in control.

Alisson continued to shine, making another impressive save to deny Khvicha Kvaratskhelia once more, ensuring the score remained level at halftime. After the restart, Alisson remained vigilant, tipping a free-kick wide and holding onto a curling attempt from Kvaratskhelia. Achraf Hakimi then slipped while shooting, sending the ball over the bar, and Liverpool scrambled to clear several dangerous crosses into their penalty area.

The visitors had struggled to create meaningful opportunities, with Mohamed Salah's difficulties against Nuno Mendes being a notable example. Even the introduction of Darwin Nunez couldn't immediately spark Liverpool's attack, and he was actually cautioned for catching Gianluigi Donnarumma while trying to make something happen. PSG substitute Desire Doue was the latest to test Alisson, who produced another outstanding save, and also palmed away a curling ball from Ousmane Dembélé.

Just when it seemed like Liverpool had weathered the storm, they caught PSG off guard with a swift counterattack. Nunez slid the ball across to Harvey Elliott, who had only just come off the bench, and Elliott beat Donnarumma with his first touch, just 47 seconds after entering the game. This goal not only gave Liverpool a crucial advantage to take back to Anfield but also brought an end to PSG's 22-game unbeaten run and 20-match scoring streak across all competitions.
