LaLiga: Atletico Madrid's Title Hopes Dented by Getafe's Dramatic Late Win

Getafe stunned Atletico Madrid with a late comeback, as Mauro Arambarri scored twice in the final minutes to secure a 2-1 win and boost Getafe's survival hopes.

Getafe dealt a significant blow to Atletico Madrid's LaLiga title aspirations with a stunning 2-1 victory at the Coliseum. This comeback win marked Getafe's first triumph over their capital rivals in 25 top-flight encounters.

Atletico Madrid's chances of moving to the top of the LaLiga table were thwarted by Getafe's late surge. The defeat also marked Diego Simeone's first loss to a side managed by Jose Bordalas. Atletico's starting lineup showed only three changes from their midweek loss to Real Madrid, and it seemed they were conserving energy ahead of their upcoming second leg against their local rivals.

However, this cautious approach came at a cost, as Atletico Madrid struggled to find their rhythm and failed to register a single shot on target in the first half. The Rojiblancos were clearly not operating at full capacity, and this lethargy ultimately proved costly as Getafe seized the initiative with a late brace from Arambarri.

Getafe fulfilled their defensive obligations admirably, maintaining their reputation for being involved in low-scoring first halves. Prior to kickoff, Getafe's matches had averaged a league-low 0.65 total first-half goals. Antoine Griezmann, who had scored seven goals in his previous eight league encounters against Getafe, initially struggled to make an impact. However, he did pose a threat from set pieces, narrowly missing the target with a headed effort from a corner just after the 30-minute mark.

Getafe's best scoring opportunity in the first half arose from a set piece, as Christantus Uche met a free kick into the area but directed his header straight into the arms of Jan Oblak. Atletico's double substitution at halftime failed to inject any tempo into their game, with the visitors struggling to create meaningful chances despite dominating possession against their local rivals. As Getafe continued to outmuscle Atletico, the introduction of the physically imposing Alexander Sorloth seemed a logical tactical move.

Just after the hour mark, Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak experienced a nervy moment when he spilled a half-shot from Ramon Terrats, but he quickly recovered to prevent any lurking Getafe players from capitalizing on the mistake. As the final quarter hour approached, Robin Le Normand met a free kick that appeared to be heading in via a deflection off Omar Alderete, who cleared off the line. However, his heroic intervention was undone by a harsh VAR call for an unintentional handball, and from the resulting penalty, Sorloth struck a precise left-footed shot into the bottom-right corner to give Getafe the lead.

The momentum shifted further in Getafe's favor as Arambarri sealed the win with a late brace, condemning Atletico to a 2-1 defeat and dealing a significant blow to their LaLiga title aspirations.

Getafe's prospects of mounting a comeback appeared bleak, given their reliance on physicality throughout the match. However, in a stunning turn of events, they capitalized on Angel Correa's red card for a high boot on Djene to snatch an equalizer from a free-kick. Mauro Arambarri expertly fired the ball into the near post, revitalizing Getafe's hopes.

Arambarri's impact was far from over, as he struck again just minutes later to complete his brace. The Uruguayan met a low pass from Diego Rico and clinically dispatched the ball into the net. This dramatic turnaround not only earned Getafe a crucial 2-1 victory but also opened up a seven-point gap between them and the relegation zone. Conversely, the defeat dealt a significant blow to Atletico's title aspirations, with Diego Simeone's men now facing a daunting run of fixtures.
