Juventus Boss Motta Refuses to Throw in Towel After Heavy Defeats
Juventus director Cristiano Giuntoli has backed manager Thiago Motta despite the team's recent heavy defeats, while Motta has vowed to fight on and secure a top-four finish in Serie A.
Juventus manager Thiago Motta has received backing from the club's football director, Cristiano Giuntoli, despite suffering a second consecutive heavy defeat. On Sunday, Juventus lost 3-0 to Fiorentina, which followed a 4-0 thrashing at home to Atalanta the previous weekend. The defeats have left Juventus fifth in the Serie A standings and Motta under increasing pressure.
Giuntoli expressed his disappointment with the recent performances but emphasized the importance of unity during difficult times. “In these moments we must all stay united, we all come out of difficulties together,” Giuntoli told Sky Sports. He acknowledged that the team has had a year marked by ups and downs but highlighted that they had never played two games as poorly as they did against Atalanta and Fiorentina. “We are very sorry, we have had a year with ups and downs but we had never played two games so below par, but we are convinced we can come out of this all together.”
When asked if Juventus would continue with Motta at the helm, Giuntoli gave a resounding endorsement. “Certainly,” he said. Giuntoli reiterated the club's commitment to their project, which involves navigating difficulties while reducing salaries and other expenses. He emphasized that their primary goal remains qualifying for the Champions League. “We started from a project in which we counted on having difficulties, lowering salaries and everything else, we must think about nothing but our primary goal, which is to qualify for the Champions League.”
Cristiano Giuntoli, Juventus' football director, is adopting a level-headed approach after the team's two consecutive heavy defeats. He recalled how the club didn't get carried away with excitement after starting the season with two 3-0 wins over Como and Hellas Verona. “We try to analyse in a lucid way what has happened in recent weeks. Let's not forget that the media, after Verona, had us as a potential winner of the league,” Giuntoli said.

Giuntoli emphasized the importance of balance and not overreacting to the recent setbacks. “We need balance, we cannot go from the stars to the stables. In the next few days we will try, with a clear mind, to move forward. We have to have balance, on and off the pitch. Until two games ago, the team had the best defence in the league, conceding four or three goals means that we have lost balance.”
Thiago Motta, Juventus' manager, remains committed to his role despite the team's struggles in his first season. When asked about the possibility of resigning, Motta replied, “It would be too easy to do it. I don't like easy things.” He emphasized the team's need to win and find a way to secure the necessary points to achieve their goal of finishing in the top four. “We need to win, we have to find a way to get the points we need for our goal, which is to be in the top four of the championship.”
Motta acknowledged that the team's recent performances have followed a similar pattern. “It's a bit like a continuation of the last game, it's the same story. We start well, then at the first difficulty, like against Atalanta, we were unable to react.”
