Gujarat Titans posted an impressive total of 196-8 after being invited to bat first at the world's largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. Sai Sudharsan played a crucial role in the team's success, scoring 63 runs off 41 deliveries. Mohammed Siraj led the bowling charge, removing the Mumbai openers to hinder their chase. Prasidh Krishna also made a significant impact, claiming two wickets and returning figures of 2-18, which ultimately earned him the Player of the Match award. Krishna, who has represented India in three Tests, 17 ODIs, and five T20s, shared his insights on his bowling strategy. “I was itching to bowl. We were sitting and watching how the first innings went. So we understood that cutters into the wicket were working well,” he said.
Mumbai Indians' former captain Rohit Sharma began aggressively, hitting two consecutive boundaries. However, Mohammed Siraj ultimately gained the upper hand, bowling Sharma out for eight on the fourth ball.
Siraj continued his impressive form, dismissing South African wicketkeeper-batsman Ryan Rickelton for six. Rickelton got an inside edge on the ball, which hit his stumps. The Mumbai Indians then attempted to rebuild, with Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav forming a 62-run partnership for the third wicket. However, Prasidh Krishna broke this partnership by removing Varma for 39.
Suryakumar Yadav played a crucial innings, scoring 48 runs and hitting four sixes, in an effort to keep up with the increasing scoring rate. Alongside captain Hardik Pandya, he attempted to revive the chase. However, the Gujarat Titans' bowling remained disciplined, and Krishna eventually claimed Suryakumar's wicket. Kagiso Rabada then dismissed Pandya for 11, effectively ending the Mumbai Indians' pursuit.
Hardik Pandya reflected on the match, highlighting areas where his team fell short. “Tough to put it together, I think in batting and bowling, we were 15-20 runs short in both places,” Pandya said. He also emphasized the importance of fielding, stating, “We were not professional in the field, we made basic errors and that cost us 20-25 runs and in a T20 game that is quite a lot.”
Gujarat Titans openers Sai Sudharsan and Shubman Gill adopted a cautious approach initially, but soon shifted gears to accelerate the scoring. The duo hammered 35 runs across overs five and six, setting the tone for their team's innings.
The opening stand between Sudharsan and Gill was eventually broken when Hardik Pandya, returning from a suspension, dismissed Gill for 38. Gill was caught at deep square leg, ending a promising 78-run partnership. Pandya, who had been charged with a slow-over rate offense in the previous edition, made a notable impact with the ball, returning figures of 2-29.
Sai Sudharsan then formed another crucial partnership with England's Jos Buttler, who maintained the momentum with regular boundaries. Buttler scored 39 runs off 24 deliveries, but his innings was eventually cut short by Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who had him caught behind.
As Gujarat's innings progressed, Hardik Pandya struck again, dismissing the big-hitting Shahrukh Khan for nine. West Indies left-hander Sherfane Rutherford also fell to seam bowler Deepak Chahar for 18. Despite these setbacks, Sudharsan remained steadfast and reached his fifty, helping to stabilize Gujarat's middle order.
However, Sudharsan's innings was eventually brought to an end by New Zealand left-arm quick Trent Boult, who trapped the batsman lbw. Although Gujarat's batting stuttered in the middle order, Sudharsan's knock had provided a solid foundation. The team's total of 196-8 ultimately proved sufficient to secure their first win of the season.
Gujarat's bowlers, led by Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna, delivered a disciplined performance to restrict Mumbai Indians to 160-6. This 36-run victory marked Gujarat's first win in two matches, providing a much-needed boost to their campaign.
