EPL: Liverpool Come from Behind to Beat Southampton 3-1, Extending Premier League Lead

Liverpool staged a second-half comeback to beat Southampton 3-1, with Darwin Núñez and Mohamed Salah on target, and move 16 points clear at the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool staged a comeback to defeat Southampton 3-1 at Anfield, with Darwin Núñez scoring his first home goal since November to help the Reds extend their lead at the top of the Premier League table to 16 points.

Following their hard-fought 1-0 win over PSG in the European clash on Wednesday, Liverpool returned to Anfield expecting a more straightforward outing against struggling Southampton, who sit at the bottom of the Premier League table. However, the Reds found it challenging to capitalize on the vulnerabilities of the league's worst defense in the first half.

Despite having some scoring opportunities, Liverpool failed to impress in the first period. Curtis Jones sent an early effort wide, and Darwin Núñez's shot was comfortably saved by Aaron Ramsdale. As a result, the home fans had little to get excited about before the break. In fact, the Liverpool supporters went into halftime in a subdued mood after Southampton grabbed a surprise opener in first-half stoppage time, capitalizing on a costly defensive mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker.

Will Smallbone capitalized on the defensive miscommunication between Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker, slotting the ball into the near post to score his first top-flight goal and give Southampton a surprise lead.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot, serving a touchline ban, was unimpressed with his team's first-half display and made a triple substitution at halftime, introducing Andy Robertson, Alexis Mac Allister, and Harvey Elliott. However, it was two players who started the game that combined to equalize for Liverpool in the 52nd minute. Luis Díaz drove towards the byline before cutting the ball back for Darwin Núñez to guide home and level the score.

The game swung in Liverpool's favor just moments later, as Núñez drew a foul from Smallbone in the box, earning a penalty. Mohamed Salah stepped up and fired the penalty out of Aaron Ramsdale's reach, giving Liverpool the lead. In the closing stages, Salah had another opportunity to score from the penalty spot after Yukinari Sugawara was penalized for handball. This time, the 32-year-old sent Ramsdale the wrong way, drilling his effort into the top corner to seal the win and take his Premier League goal tally to 27.

The victory moves Liverpool closer to their 20th top-flight title and serves as a confidence-boosting win ahead of their return meeting with PSG. Meanwhile, Southampton's defeat leaves them 13 points adrift of safety, edging them closer to inevitable relegation to the Championship.
