Burn and Isak Strike as Newcastle End 70-Year Trophy Drought
Newcastle United won their first major domestic trophy in 70 years, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium. Goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak sealed the victory for Eddie Howe's side.
Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes described the team's League Cup final victory over Liverpool as “the best day of my life.” Newcastle's 2-1 win at Wembley Stadium on Sunday marked the team's first major domestic trophy in 70 years. Guimaraes expressed his joy and gratitude, stating, ”It's all for these fans. They deserve everything.”
The Brazilian midfielder reflected on his journey with the team, saying, “When I first came here, I said I wanted to put my name in history.” Guimaraes' wish has now come true, as Newcastle has ended its 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy. The captain added, “We can now say we are the champions again... I don't have any words. It's the best day of my life.”
Guimaraes acknowledged the significance of the victory for the team's fans, saying, "For them (the fans), it's like the World Cup." He also recognized the importance of this achievement for the club's history, stating, “People have grown up and not seen us as champions. My first year as captain of this club, and it's one of the best days. This is unbelievable.”

The emotional captain expressed his love for the club and its fans, saying, “This is my second home. We are making history.” Guimaraes also revealed that he hopes to leave a lasting legacy at the club, stating, “Some day when I leave this club, I want the fans to sing my name the way they do to (former Newcastle captain Alan) Shearer.” He also shared that Shearer had sent him a text message before the game, which added to his emotional state. “He texted me before the game. I'm so emotional today,” Guimaraes said.
Newcastle took the lead in the 45th minute through a powerful header from Burn. The centre back expertly pulled away from the Liverpool defense to the far post, where he met the ball with a bullet header that Caoimhin Kelleher could only watch as it bounced past him and into the net.

Newcastle's momentum was briefly halted when a goal from Isak was disallowed by VAR for offside. However, the Swede didn't have to wait long to get his name on the scoresheet. Just moments later, he pounced on a knock-down from Jacob Murphy and fired the ball into the back of the net, doubling Newcastle's lead in the 52nd minute.
Liverpool's late surge in the game yielded a consolation goal from Federico Chiesa in stoppage time, but it was too little, too late, as Newcastle held on for the win. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe was overcome with emotion after the match, saying, “Emotional, very emotional. It is very unlike me. We knew what was at stake and just wanted to do everyone proud.”
Howe reflected on the significance of the win, stating, “We were desperate to try and win the trophy after so many years of hurt.” He also highlighted the team's preparation and his confidence in their ability to perform. “It had a different feel. We have won the game and everything will be reviewed positively, but we prepared well and I was very confident the players would perform,” he added.
