Amorim: Manchester United Will Not Continue to Play Like That After Arsenal Draw
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has vowed to change the team's approach after a 1-1 draw with Arsenal, saying 'in the future, we will not play like that'.
Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged that the team's performance in their 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Sunday was not up to par, stating that the fans deserve better. His comments came after a day that began with a protest by several thousand supporters outside Old Trafford.
The protest, which saw most of the supporters dressed in black, involved a march to the stadium. The fans were demonstrating against the club's ownership, which has faced criticism for the team's poor on-field performance, as well as rising ticket prices and job losses within the organization.

The protesters, who chanted and carried banners, made their feelings clear about the club's ownership. One banner read, “Love United, Hate Glazers,” in reference to the American Glazer family, which owns Manchester United. The protest was organized by fan organization The 1958 and marked just over a year since British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe struck a deal to buy a 25% stake in the club.

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim acknowledged the passion and dedication of the fans, saying, “This club will never die, that is clear. You feel it in the streets. This is a big business and maybe all the fans in this league sometimes feel it is harder to go to the games and pay for tickets.” Amorim expressed his desire to reward the fans' loyalty with a strong performance, adding, “We want to give them a lot of effort. In the future, we will not play like that.”
Amorim had hoped that his team would “use the energy”from the fan unrest to drive their performance. However, after the match, he expressed disappointment with the team's display, particularly in the first half. Amorim felt that the team's defensive approach was too negative, saying, “It's just the low block, it's just the way to give the ball to the opponent.” Despite this, he did acknowledge some positive aspects of the team's performance, noting, “But the spirit to follow the plan, to be together, that is a good thing. This is an example for the future, but I'm just seeing the low block, and you can feel it a little bit, the frustration of our fans in the first half.”
Ruben Amorim was questioned about Manchester United's tendency to perform well against stronger teams, such as their 2-1 win over Manchester City in December and 2-2 draw with league leaders Liverpool in January. Amorim offered a possible explanation, saying, “I don't know. Maybe, it is that in those games it is a little bit more acceptable to play in the low block, and that can help us a lot.”
Amorim elaborated on the challenges of adapting their playing style to different opponents, stating, “Against other teams, we have to push forward. That's why it's difficult here. Sometimes you have to press high, it's more difficult, sometimes the characteristics of the players are not there to do that.” This flexibility in approach is essential for United's success, but it can also be a difficult balance to strike.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes scored the team's only goal with a brilliant direct free kick just before halftime. Amorim praised Fernandes' consistent contributions, saying, “I think (Fernandes) steps up all the time.” He acknowledged that Fernandes can sometimes show frustration, but emphasized his importance to the team, adding, “Sometimes he can show some frustration in some moments that can hurt him more than anybody, and I understand that, it's the frustration that he wants to win.”

Amorim highlighted Fernandes' versatility and willingness to adapt to different situations, saying, “But he is always available, always there to play in different positions when we need, sometimes a goal, a free kick and assist is always there. He's a very good example for the other players.”
