Salah Breaks Records as Liverpool Maintain Premier League Lead

Liverpool star Mohamed Salah broke multiple records as the Reds edged Manchester City 2-0, further solidifying their title hopes.

Mohamed Salah continued to etch his name in the Premier League record books as Liverpool secured a convincing 2-0 victory over Manchester City on Sunday. The Egyptian forward played a pivotal role in the Reds' win, scoring the opener in the 14th minute and setting up Dominik Szoboszlai for the second goal just before halftime.

Salah's impressive performance saw him break multiple Premier League records, including becoming the first player in English top-flight history to achieve a remarkable feat. He is now the first player to score and assist in both matches against the reigning champions in a single season, cementing his status as one of the league's most dominant players.

Mohamed Salah's outstanding performance against Manchester City has further solidified his position among the elite players in European football. With his goal and assist against Pep Guardiola's side, Salah has now scored and assisted in 49 different league matches throughout his career in Europe's top five leagues. This achievement puts him in esteemed company, with only Lionel Messi (102 matches) and Cristiano Ronaldo (65 matches) having accomplished this feat more frequently.

Salah's goal against Manchester City extended his scoring streak to eight consecutive matches, dating back to January 21 in a Champions League clash against Lille at Anfield. This strike also marked his 25th Premier League goal of the season, increasing his lead over closest rival Erling Haaland. Furthermore, Salah's goal was his 16th away goal of the 2024/25 campaign, tying the record set by Kevin Phillips in 1999/00 and Harry Kane in 2022/23.

Salah's impressive performance has seen him break multiple records. He has become the first player in Premier League history to be involved in at least 40 goals in two different seasons. In the 2017/18 season, Salah registered 32 goals and 10 assists, while in the current campaign, he has contributed 25 goals and 15 assists in the 27 matches he has played. Additionally, Salah holds the record for both the most goals (9) and most assists (6) of any player against teams managed by Pep Guardiola in his top-flight managerial career.

Mohamed Salah expressed his delight at Liverpool's hard-fought 2-0 win over Manchester City, acknowledging the difficulty of securing a victory at the Etihad Stadium. “It is an incredible result; it is a very hard place to come and play. They are a tough team with an incredible manager I'm glad we won the game,” Salah told the media after the match.

When asked if he felt he was currently at the peak of his powers, Salah remained humble, suggesting that opinions on his best period may vary. “I don't know. It is about opinion. Maybe people prefer my first seasons or now but I prefer now because of winning the league, helping the young players. It is special,” he said. Salah's ambition for further success was clear, as he emphasized the importance of securing another title. “We need another title. Me and the big guys in the team, we need another title.”

The win over Manchester City maintained Liverpool's commanding lead in the Premier League, with the Reds accumulating 64 points to sit 11 points clear of their closest challengers, Arsenal.
