Ligue 1: Marseille Revive Title Hopes with Dramatic 3-2 Win Over Lyon

Marseille secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Lyon, with Luis Henrique's late strike proving decisive in a gripping encounter that revived the hosts' Ligue 1 title hopes.

Marseille secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over Lyon, ending a three-match winless streak and reviving their Ligue 1 title hopes. The match marked a stark contrast between two halves, with the second period coming alive in a frenzy of goals.

New Lyon head coach Paulo Fonseca faced a baptism by fire in his first match, visiting the intimidating Stade Vélodrome. Despite the challenging environment, Fonseca's side navigated the first half with relative ease, limiting Marseille's scoring opportunities. The hosts created a few chances, but Michael Amir Murillo's wayward shot and Bilal Nadir's saved effort were the only notable attempts on goal.

The match sparked to life in the 53rd minute when Corentin Tolisso silenced the Velodrome with a beautifully crafted counter-attack goal. The Lyon midfielder finished with precision, tucking the ball under the onrushing Geronimo Rulli. This marked Lyon's first shot on target, and they soon followed up with another attempt, which Rulli denied.

However, Marseille responded strongly, and their top scorer Mason Greenwood equalized just past the hour mark. Greenwood applied a simple tap-in from a Marseille counter-attack, with debutant Amine Gouiri claiming an assist just three minutes after coming on.

Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi was not involved in this match. Marseille took the lead when Adrien Rabiot headed the hosts in front. The goal came after Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg headed Mason Greenwood's lofted pass into Rabiot's path, allowing the French midfielder to nod the ball home.

The match had burst into life, with controversy soon following. Referee Jerome Brisard consulted the pitchside monitor and determined that Rabiot had handled Nicolas Tagliafico's cut-back, awarding Lyon a penalty. Alexandre Lacazette made no mistake from the spot, restoring parity in the gripping encounter between the two French heavyweights.

As the match intensified, Marseille began to gain the upper hand. Luis Henrique sent the crowd into raptures with a superb first-time finish from Pol Lirola's cross, securing a thrilling 3-2 victory for the hosts.

The defeat marked a disappointing start to Paulo Fonseca's tenure as Lyon manager. His side missed the opportunity to move into the top six, remaining seventh in the standings. Meanwhile, Marseille's victory propelled them to within 10 points of league leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
