Late Drama as PSV Eindhoven Rescue Point Against FC Utrecht
PSV Eindhoven's struggles continued as they were held to a 2-2 draw by FC Utrecht, leaving them vulnerable to being overtaken by rivals Ajax in the Eredivisie title race.
Reigning Eredivisie champions PSV Eindhoven continued their downward spiral, dropping points for the third consecutive time in a 2-2 draw against FC Utrecht. This result narrowly prevented PSV's first home defeat since 2022. The team's struggles have been evident since the start of the year, with only one win in their previous five Eredivisie games.
PSV's slump has seen them relinquish their top spot in the league standings. After a late draw against Willem II and Ajax's subsequent win over Fortuna Sittard, PSV dropped to second place. Their opponents, FC Utrecht, have also experienced a decline in form since the Christmas break, securing only one league win in 2025.
FC Utrecht's poor run of form has resulted in a five-game winless streak, including a shocking loss to last-placed Almere City. This slump has pushed Utrecht out of title contention, widening the gap to the top of the table to nine points. The team's struggles continued as PSV took the lead after eleven minutes, courtesy of Armando Obispo's unchecked header from Joey Veerman's corner kick.
PSV's lead was short-lived, as Mike van der Hoorn equalized just five minutes later with a well-placed header from Jens Toornstra's cross. Despite the setback, PSV continued to push for the lead, but Vasilios Barkas thwarted their efforts, denying Joey Veerman, Richard Ledezma, Guus Til, and Armando Obispo before halftime.
The home side maintained their pressure in the second half, limiting Utrecht's scoring opportunities. However, PSV were unable to retake the lead, with Johan Bakayoko and Ivan Perisic both being denied by Barkas. This reprieve allowed Utrecht to seize the initiative and take the lead for the first time, courtesy of Paxten Aaronson's headed goal in the 75th minute.

PSV responded to the setback by intensifying their attack, pinning Utrecht back in their own territory. However, Barkas produced a string of outstanding saves, single-handedly keeping his side ahead. Just when it seemed like Utrecht would hold on for the win, Isaac Babadi scored a dramatic equalizer in the second minute of added time, converting a Noa Lang cross to salvage a point for PSV.
FC Utrecht were presented with a golden opportunity to seal a historic win in Eindhoven, their first since 1980, but Miliano Jonathans squandered the chance just two minutes after Isaac Babadi's equalizer. Jonathans found himself one-on-one with goalkeeper Benitez but disappointingly fired the ball wide, relinquishing the chance to snatch all three points.
The 2-2 draw marked the fifth time in six league games that PSV have dropped points, leaving them vulnerable to being overtaken by rivals Ajax. With Ajax hosting Heracles Almelo the following day, PSV risk falling behind in the title race. Meanwhile, FC Utrecht's failure to secure a win means they could potentially drop to fourth place, depending on other results, while missing the chance to reduce the gap to PSV to six points.
