Bellingham Denies Wrongdoing After Receiving Red Card in Real Madrid Draw

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has denied insulting the referee after being shown a red card in Saturday's 1-1 draw against Osasuna, claiming his conscience is clear.

Real Madrid midfielder Jude Bellingham has denied insulting the referee after being shown a red card during Saturday's 1-1 draw against Osasuna. The 21-year-old English international was dismissed after 39 minutes of the match at El Sadar Stadium after exchanging words with referee Jose Munuera Montero.

Bellingham claimed that his red card was a result of a “misunderstanding” and that he had not directed any insults at the referee. Instead, he stated that he was expressing his frustration in general. “I think you can see clearly in the video, I remember the incident very well, it was an expression (I was saying) to myself,” Bellingham explained.

The young midfielder emphasized that he was not directing his words at the referee. “I'm not even directing myself towards the referee, but obviously there was a misunderstanding. He's believed that I've said (something insulting) to him... There was no intent to insult him, there was no insult, and for that reason I think you can see there was a misunderstanding,” Bellingham clarified.

Real Madrid has been vocal in their criticism of refereeing in Spain in recent weeks, going as far as sending a letter to the Spanish football federation, labeling it “rigged.” This controversy has added fuel to the fire in the wake of Jude Bellingham's red card.

Bellingham expressed his hope that video evidence of the incident would be reviewed, potentially clearing him of any wrongdoing and helping him avoid a significant suspension. “It's difficult when a referee isn't sure, to determine that I've said something that I haven't, and as a result, it kind of hinders the team,” Bellingham said.

The England international acknowledged that his involvement in the incident had ultimately led to his team being left with 10 players. However, he emphasized that he had not intentionally tried to put his team in that situation. “I only want to make sure that the team knows that I wasn't irresponsible enough to put them in a situation where I intentionally wanted them to be left with 10, but of course, being involved means that's the case,” Bellingham explained.

Bellingham reiterated his desire for the footage to be reviewed, highlighting the importance of considering video evidence in such situations. “I hope that the footage will be reviewed and see that it's not the same as the report, and that going forward the federation can keep that into consideration because it's huge evidence,” he said.

Jude Bellingham has spoken out about the incident that led to his red card, stating that his conscience is clear. “The report, obviously the reason why he sent me off doesn't match what I've said,” he explained. Bellingham remains calm, knowing that he did not say anything wrong, even if the expression he used was something he has been saying to himself since he was 16 or 17 years old.

Bellingham acknowledged that this was his second red card for Real Madrid since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2023. The first incident occurred last March when he argued with referee Jesus Gil Manzano following a 2-2 league draw at Valencia. Reflecting on the two incidents, Bellingham noted that the previous one was more justified. “I think the one last year is a bit more difficult... I think I definitely put myself in a situation,” he admitted.

The draw against Osasuna earned Real Madrid a two-point lead over second-placed Atletico Madrid before their match against Celta later on Saturday. However, the result also marked Real Madrid's third consecutive league game without a victory.
