Super-G Win Propels Gut-Behrami Back into Overall Contention

Lara Gut-Behrami claimed her first win of the season in the super-G event at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, finishing ahead of Kajsa Vickhoff Lie and Federica Brignone. The victory cuts Brignone's overall lead, with Gut-Behrami now trailing by 70 points.

Lara Gut-Behrami, the defending overall World Cup champion, secured her first win of the season in the super-G event at Garmisch-Partenkirchen on Sunday. The 33-year-old Swiss skier posted a time of one minute 14.91 seconds, finishing 0.35 seconds ahead of Norway's Kajsa Vickhoff Lie, while Italian Federica Brignone completed the podium. American Lindsey Vonn, a 40-year-old four-time overall World Cup champion, finished 13th, 1.40 seconds adrift of the winner.

Gut-Behrami's victory extends her lead over Brignone in the super-G standings, which she also won last season, along with the giant slalom. The win also cuts Brignone's overall lead, with Gut-Behrami now trailing by just 70 points. Despite Brignone recording five World Cup wins this season, including the downhill on Saturday, Gut-Behrami remains optimistic about her chances. “I've been struggling a little bit, I had to get the confidence back, the way to push on the skis again, and I made mistakes,” Gut-Behrami said. “I'm happy that today everything came together.”

Vonn, who had failed to finish her previous two races, continued her comeback after coming out of retirement in November. The 40-year-old American is working her way back into competitive skiing after quitting the sport in 2019. Meanwhile, the World Cup circuit looks ahead to Thursday's slalom in Courchevel, where American Mikaela Shiffrin is set to return from injury and resume her hunt for a 100th World Cup win.
