Liam Coen Takes Jaguars Job, Leaving Buccaneers Contract Extension Behind

The Jacksonville Jaguars have hired Liam Coen as their new head coach, poaching him from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Get the latest on this NFL coaching move.

Liam Coen is set to become the new head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars, leaving his role as offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. At 39, Coen will be the third Jaguars head coach in the past five years, following Doug Pederson's departure.

Coen's decision comes after a whirlwind few days, where he initially pulled out of the running for the Jaguars job, only to re-engage with the team after they fired GM Trent Baalke. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, Coen was swayed by the Jaguars' offer of “Ben Johnson-level money” and the opportunity to choose the team's next general manager.

Dave Coen, formerly the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offensive coordinator, has officially taken the reins as the Jacksonville Jaguars' new head coach. A lucrative contract extension with the Buccaneers was on the table, but Coen's move to Jacksonville was contingent on the team parting ways with general manager Trent Baalke.

Coen's coaching credentials are impressive, having served as the offensive coordinator for the 2022 Los Angeles Rams team that secured a Super Bowl victory. In his first season as the Buccaneers' OC, Coen led the team to a third-place ranking in total scoring and fourth in total offense. Although the Buccaneers won the NFC South title with a 10-7 season, they ultimately fell to the Washington Commanders in the NFC Wild Card round.
