Australian Open: Gadecki and Peers Claim Mixed Doubles Crown

Olivia Gadecki and John Peers have won the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open, defeating compatriots Kimberly Birrell and John-Patrick Smith.

Olivia Gadecki, 22, and John Peers, 36, made history at Melbourne Park on Saturday, becoming the fourth Australian duo in the Open era to win the mixed doubles title. The pair defeated compatriots Kimberly Birrell and John-Patrick Smith in a thrilling 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 match.

Birrell and Smith dominated the opening set, racing to a 3-0 lead on Rod Laver Arena. Although Gadecki and Peers narrowed the gap to 5-2, Birrell and Smith maintained their composure to secure the set in 34 minutes. However, Gadecki and Peers regrouped and elevated their game to win the second set and ultimately claim the title in the 10-point tiebreaker.

For Olivia Gadecki, the mixed doubles title at the Australian Open was a maiden Grand Slam victory. However, her partner John Peers is no stranger to Grand Slam success. The 36-year-old Peers secured his second mixed doubles title, having previously won the 2022 US Open. His impressive resume also includes men's doubles gold at the Paris Olympics and the 2017 Australian Open title.

During the post-match presentation, Gadecki praised their opponents, Kimberly Birrell and John-Patrick Smith, saying, “Fantastic job to Kim and JP for a great week... it's so nice to play in an all-Aussie final.” She also thanked Peers for the opportunity to play alongside him. The crowd was treated to a heartwarming moment when Birrell led the crowd in singing 'Happy Birthday' to Smith, who turned 36 on the day of the final.

The match marked a significant milestone, being the first all-Australian final at the Australian Open in the Open era and the first since 1967. This victory also means that the 2025 Australian Open becomes the 14th edition of the tournament where an Australian player has been crowned champion in at least one category.
