EPL: Newcastle Come from Behind to Defeat Southampton 3-1
Newcastle United came from behind to defeat Southampton 3-1, with Alexander Isak scoring a brace to help his side move into the top four.
Newcastle United staged a comeback to defeat Southampton 3-1 in the Premier League, condemning the Saints to their 19th defeat of the season. The win propelled Newcastle into the top four, while Southampton's struggles continued.
Southampton defied expectations with a strong start, taking the lead within 10 minutes. Jan Bednarek powered home James Bree's delivery, catching Newcastle off guard. However, their advantage was short-lived, as Southampton's self-destructive tendencies resurfaced.
The turning point came when Joe Aribo fouled Alexander Isak in the area, prompting a VAR check. Sam Barrott awarded the penalty, which Isak coolly converted to level the score. The equalizer visibly drained the confidence from Southampton, and they soon found themselves trailing. Jacob Murphy's precise pass found Isak, who slid the ball home into the far corner with ease.

The 2-1 scoreline at halftime was arguably flattering to Southampton, as Newcastle had several opportunities to extend their lead. Joelinton, in particular, was denied by the post and an offside flag, preventing him from sealing the game before the interval.

However, Southampton's reprieve was short-lived, as Sandro Tonali's well-timed run behind the defense allowed him to burst clear on goal and find the corner. This effectively ended the game as a contest, leaving Southampton facing the prospect of another heavy defeat.

Southampton had conceded five goals in three of their previous four home league games, and they were fortunate to avoid a repeat performance. Jacob Murphy's strike cannoned off the post, sparing the hosts further embarrassment. With the game seemingly won, Newcastle appeared to relax, allowing Southampton to gain some momentum in the closing stages.
In the final moments, Mateus Fernandes capitalized on a defensive mix-up to seemingly halve the deficit. However, VAR intervened, calling an offside that spared Newcastle's blushes. The Magpies then saw out the remainder of the game without incident, securing a fourth successive top-flight away win for the first time since 1996.
