Follow Atletico Madrid's thrilling 4-3 win over Sevilla, highlighted by Griezmann's heroics and Simeone's strategic substitutions.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone lavished praise on his substitutes for their pivotal role in the team's dramatic comeback victory over Sevilla in LaLiga on Sunday. The win marked Atletico's ninth consecutive triumph in all competitions, a testament to the team's resilience and depth.
Trailing 3-1 in the second half, Atletico Madrid staged an impressive turnaround, thanks in large part to Simeone's astute substitutions. The introduction of Brazilian winger Samuel Lino proved particularly inspired, as he scored the equalizing goal. Antoine Griezmann then sealed the comeback, capping an exhilarating second-half display that showcased Atletico's character and determination.
With Atletico Madrid sitting third in the LaLiga standings with 35 points, just one point behind Real Madrid and three points behind leaders Barcelona, manager Diego Simeone emphasized the significance of his substitutes' performances in making his team a legitimate title contender.
Simeone expressed his delight with the team's overall cohesion and the impact of his substitutes. “The team is working very well as a unit. It makes me happy when those who are waiting enter into the match well. Because that's the strength to stay in the game,” he stated during a news conference. Simeone also highlighted the fact that all his players have seen significant playing time this season. “They have all played since we started (the season) and they have played quite a lot, almost all of them. Some have made better use of the chances they've been given, others are trying to improve to get more.”
“Lino's goal makes me happy because he's been looking for it. Today he scored an important goal for the comeback and hopefully it will give him the confidence he needs.
“Today the team made me very happy with the reaction they had with the substitutions.”
Atletico Madrid's star player and all-time leading scorer, Antoine Griezmann, stole the show with a double against Sevilla, earning high praise from manager Diego Simeone. Simeone acknowledged that Griezmann had a slow start to the game but still managed to make a significant impact. “He wasn't playing well in the first half, but with little he had already done a lot,” Simeone noted.
Griezmann's improvement in the second half was evident, as he scored the decisive fourth goal. Simeone's admiration for Griezmann's dedication to the team was clear. “In the second half I think he improved, the fourth goal came, and well, we love him a lot,” he said. "He's a guy who has always given absolutely everything to Atletico Madrid." Despite the team's impressive form, Simeone remained cautious, recognizing that the season is long and challenging.
“In a long season, with so many games, with LaLiga, Champions League, Copa del Rey, Club World Cup, there are many games and obviously we are going to have to go through different stages,” he said.
”The most important thing is to be strong and to make sure that these situations do as little damage as possible.”
