Nigeria's 2025 budget hangs in balance as President Tinubu's delayed submission raises concerns about fiscal responsibility & economic stability.
The House of Representatives has expressed concerns over President Bola Tinubu's alleged breach of the Fiscal Responsibility Act. In a recent motion, lawmakers pointed out that the 2025 Budget Estimates have not been submitted to the National Assembly, violating the Act.
According to the Fiscal Responsibility Act of 2007, the Federal Government must present the Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP) along with budget estimates at least four months before the new fiscal year.
With only two months left in 2024, lawmakers worry about the limited time to review and pass the MTEF, FSP, and 2025 Budget Estimates. The matter has been referred to the Committee on National Planning for further review.
Interestingly, President Tinubu recently embarked on a two-week leave to the United Kingdom on October 2, 2024, amidst this budget controversy.
