John Amos, pioneering actor and civil rights champion, dies at 84; his legacy continues to inspire.

Veteran actor John Amos, best known for his iconic roles in “Good Times” and “Roots,” passed away on August 21 in Los Angeles at the age of 84. His representative confirmed the news to Variety.

Born on December 27, 1939, in Newark, New Jersey, Amos' acting career spanned over five decades. He began with a role on “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1970 and went on to star as James Evans Sr. in the groundbreaking CBS series “Good Times.” Although he left the show after three seasons, his portrayal of a devoted father resonated with audiences.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned,” said his son Kelly Christopher Amos in a statement

“He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor. My father loved working as an actor throughout his entire life…. most recently in ‘Suits LA’ playing himself and our documentary about his life journey as an actor, ‘America’s Dad.’ He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero. Thank you for your prayers and support at this time.”

Amos received an Emmy nomination for his powerful performance as adult Kunta Kinte in the ABC miniseries “Roots,” which won nine Emmys and a Golden Globe. He also appeared in various other TV shows and films, including “Coming to America,” “Die Hard 2,” and “The West Wing.”

Throughout his career, Amos demonstrated his versatility, writing, producing, and starring in a one-man play, “Halley's Comet,” and performing on Broadway in August Wilson's “Gem of the Ocean.” Before becoming an actor, he played college football and briefly joined the Kansas City Chiefs.
