Tito Jackson, Michael's Elder Brother, Dies at 70

Tito Jackson (70) Passes Away

“With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Tito Jackson...”

Tito Jackson, founding member of the Jackson 5 and brother of Michael Jackson, passes away at 70. Remember his life, music, and legacy with his family and band.

Tito Jackson, a pioneering member of the legendary Jackson 5, passed away on September 15 at the age of 70. The musician suffered a fatal heart attack while driving from New York to Oklahoma.

As the brother of the late Michael Jackson, Tito was part of a musical dynasty that captivated audiences worldwide. Alongside siblings Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, Tito rose to fame in the 1970s with iconic hits like “ABC,” I Want You Back,” “Blame It On The Boogie,” and “I'll Be There.”

The Jackson 5's success paved the way for Michael's unprecedented solo career, earning him the title of global pop icon before his passing in 2009. Tito's legacy as a founding member of the group remains integral to music history.

As the third of nine Jackson children, Tito played a vital role in the family's musical endeavors, contributing guitar skills and backing vocals to the group's sound.

In addition to his work with the Jackson 5, Tito also pursued a solo career, releasing his debut album “Tito Time” in 2016, making him the last of the siblings to embark on a solo project.

Tito remained committed to performing and touring, sharing the stage with brothers Jackie and Marlon at various events, including a recent festival appearance in the UK just earlier this month, where they continued to entertain audiences with their iconic music.

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved father, Tito Jackson,” shared sons Taj, Taryll, and TJ on Instagram.

“Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their wellbeing.”

They added, “he will be missed tremendously.

“It will forever be ‘Tito Time”’ for us.

“Please remember to do what our father always preached and that is 'Love One Another.

“We love you Pops.”

Tito Jackson, known for his understated presence, was the quietest member of the Jackson 5. Beyond his work with his brothers, he explored his passion for blues music, regularly performing with a dedicated band.

Tito's creative pursuits extended beyond music. In 2006, he lent his expertise as a judge on the BBC singing competition “Just The Two Of Us,” showcasing his knowledge and ear for talent.

The Jackson family, a talented brood of nine, includes sisters Janet, LaToya, and Rebbie, as well as brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, Michael, Randy, and Tito. Their bond and shared musical talent formed the foundation of their success.

The Jackson 5, managed by their father Joe Jackson, was born in Indiana in 1964. This family group, featuring Tito and his brothers, would go on to achieve unparalleled success, leaving an enduring legacy in the music industry.

The Jackson 5's immense popularity catapulted them to sensation status, earning them a place as one of the pioneering boy bands in history. Their impressive streak of four consecutive number one singles in the US during the early 1970s cemented their fame.

With four studio albums under their belt, the group achieved staggering global sales of an estimated 150 million copies, solidifying their legacy. This success ultimately led to their well-deserved induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

The Jackson 5's phenomenal success paved the way for Michael Jackson's solo career, which he pursued while still an active member of the group. This marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey that would establish Michael as a global pop icon.

The Jackson 5

Michael Jackson's departure from the group in 1984, following the monumental success of his iconic "Thriller" album, marked a pivotal moment in his solo career.

Tito Jackson's final performances with The Jacksons took place just days before his passing. On September 8, he took the stage at the Boogietown Festival in Surrey, UK, alongside his brothers. The group's subsequent show was held on September 9 in Munich, Germany.

In a poignant Facebook post from Munich, Tito reflected on the family's visit to a memorial dedicated to his late brother, Michael Jackson. This heartfelt gesture highlighted the enduring bond between the Jackson siblings.

He wrote: “Before our show in Munich, my brothers Jackie, Marlon, and I, visited the beautiful memorial dedicated to our beloved brother, Michael Jackson.

“We're deeply grateful for this special place that honors not only his memory but also our shared legacy.

“Thank you for keeping his spirit alive.”

Tito Jackson is survived by his loving family, including his mother Katherine, three sisters (Janet, LaToya, and Rebbie), and four brothers (Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Randy).

RIP Tito Jackson.
