President Tinubu's China visit yields key deals and diplomatic engagements, followed by a meeting with King Charles III in the UK to discuss climate change and cooperation.




President Bola Tinubu is set to return to Abuja on Sunday, concluding his official visit to China and brief stay in the UK, according to the Presidency.


The President embarked on his journey from Abuja to Beijing, China, on August 29, beginning his official engagements on September 2 with a meeting with President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People.


During his time in China, President Tinubu received a warm welcome, marked by a 21-gun salute and a guard of honour ceremony, which he inspected.


President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, honored President Tinubu with a Welcoming Banquet and Cultural Gala Performance on the eve of the FOCAC Summit, further cementing the diplomatic ties between Nigeria and China.


The signed MoUs included a Cooperation Plan to advance the Belt and Road Initiative, a nuclear energy agreement for peaceful applications, and a pact to enhance human resource development under the Global Development Initiative. Additionally, MoUs were signed for media exchange and cooperation, as well as a collaboration between China Media Group and the Nigerian Television Authority.


Nigeria and China solidified key infrastructure deals, including a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to construct the 68km Lagos Green rail line, connecting Lekki Free Zone to Marina and linking with the Blue Line.


A $1 billion iron ore-to-steel project in Kogi State also gained momentum as Chart and Capstone Integrated Limited (Nigeria) and Sinomach-He (China) signed a landmark MoU.


Prior to attending the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, President Tinubu engaged with Chinese industry leaders, visiting Huawei and China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) to foster bilateral cooperation and investment.


Nigeria and China strengthened their ties with the signing of five Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during a bilateral meeting between President Bola Tinubu and President Xi Jinping.


President Tinubu continued his diplomatic efforts with a follow-up meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang, leading his delegation in another round of bilateral talks, further solidifying the partnership between both nations.

Following his productive stay in China, President Tinubu traveled to London, UK, for a series of meetings, including a significant audience with King Charles III on Thursday, during which they exchanged views on climate change and potential collaborative actions to address this pressing global challenge.


As ECOWAS Chairman, President Tinubu addressed FOCAC, emphasizing multilateralism and cooperation as crucial elements for achieving global peace in his keynote speech.


At FOCAC, President Tinubu, in his capacity as ECOWAS Chairman, presented a paper highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts and multilateral approaches in maintaining international peace.


President Tinubu, representing ECOWAS, called for collective action and cooperation in his FOCAC address, underscoring their significance in promoting global peace.
