Man City Faces Expulsion from All Competitions Amid Financial Rule Breaches
Manchester City risks expulsion from FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Champions League, and Club World Cup if found guilty of serious financial rule breaches, potentially extending their exile beyond Premier League.
Manchester City's ongoing financial rule breaches case threatens their participation in multiple competitions, including the FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Champions League, and Club World Cup.
The Premier League giants face 115-130 charges, with rivals advocating for harsher penalties than a one-off points deduction. Expulsion from the Premier League could have far-reaching consequences.
FA Cup and Carabao Cup Expulsion
Clause 31 of the FA Cup rules states: “Where a club has been admitted to participate in the competition but is then removed from the league in which it competes (or its league fixtures are suspended), the Professional Game Board [PGB] may remove the club from the competition.”
The EFL Cup rules define participating clubs as “each member from time to time of the league and each member from time to time of the Premier League.”
Champions League and Club World Cup Uncertainty
Uefa club licences are required for European competitions, with Uefa, the FA, and Premier League involved in administration. However, it's unclear if domestic league expulsion would lead to licence withdrawal.
Fifa's expanded Club World Cup regulations are not publicly available.
Consequences of Expulsion
If City are expelled from domestic football, continuing to play in the Champions League and Club World Cup would be challenging due to lengthy gaps between competitive fixtures.
Rival clubs and supporters might object to City winning these competitions after being ejected from the Premier League.
Manchester City's Response
City denies wrongdoing, stating they have “a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence” to support their position and “look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.”
