Enugu State Government corrects misinformation on private school education tax. Learn the facts about the actual tax range and the government's education reforms.
The Enugu State Government has clarified that it imposed an education tax of N100,000 to N300,000 on private schools, debunking reports of a N5 million levy.
According to Professor Ndubueze Mbah, State Commissioner for Education, the actual tax range is significantly lower than the widely reported figure.
Professor Mbah issued a statement to set the record straight, emphasizing that the government's intention is to support quality education, not to burden private schools with excessive fees.
“New and existing private schools in the state are required to either register for provisional approval or have their licences renewed,” he noted.
“This is between #100,000 and 300,000, depending on the category the schools fall in. The approved schedule of fees was released to the public earlier in June.”
Mbah urged the public to disregard the false publication that the Governor Peter Mbah-led administration had levied a mandatory education tax of N1m to N5m on private schools.
“Extant laws empower the ministry of education of to maintain minimum standards of education for both public and private schools, he said.
“The ministry is also empowered to streamline and enhance the effective administration, monitoring, and supervision of private schools.”
The commissioner stated that unlicensed private school owners, fearing imprisonment and school closures, initiated a malicious campaign to discredit the government.
“The government is undeterred, as Governor Mbah will not fold his arms and watch the future of Enugu children destroyed by illegal and unscrupulous schools and proprietors,” he stated.
The commissioner emphasized that the ministry conducted extensive consultations with education stakeholders statewide during the review of the 2024 Enugu State Schools Licensing Fees Regulation, reaffirming its commitment to seeing the reforms through.
