Vice President Shettima meets with NNPC CEO, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources to address Nigeria's fuel scarcity crisis amid petrol price hike.

Vice President Kashim Shettima met with NNPC CEO Mele Kyari and Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Heineken Lokpobiri in Abuja to tackle Nigeria's fuel scarcity crisis.

The emergency meeting, held at the Presidential Villa, included Ugbogu Ukoha of NMDPRA. President Bola Tinubu had directed Shettima to address the recent petrol price hike.

National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu joined the emergency meeting convened by Vice President Kashim Shettima to address the fuel scarcity crisis.

NNPC's sudden price hike on Tuesday, raising petrol prices from N600 to N855 across its retail outlets nationwide, sparked widespread discontent among Nigerians already struggling with economic hardship.

After the meeting, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources Heineken Lokpobiri stated that President Bola Tinubu is “deeply concerned” about the hardship caused by the petrol price increase amidst the scarcity. Lokpobiri added that Vice President Shettima called the meeting to bring together key stakeholders and discuss possible solutions.

“He (Tinubu) is concerned about the hardship of Nigerians, and that was why he directed the Vice President to call this meeting, for us to reflect on what is going on in the country," the minister said.

“What is important is that products are available in the country, and we believe that between now and the weekend, there will be availability of products across the length and breadth of the country.

“The price could be high in some other areas, higher in some other locations, and in some locations, much more than others.

“But we believe that by the time there is availability of products across the country, the price itself is stabilized

“But what is important is that the government is not fixing prices. This sector is deregulated. And we believe that with the availability of products, the price will find its level. And this is important for Nigeria to know.”
