Kano Civil Defence Corps arrests 108 suspects for vandalism and looting during hunger protest, vows to recover stolen items and prosecute suspects.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, has taken 108 suspects into custody for allegedly participating in the destruction of government and public property during the recent hunger protest in the state.

The protest, which began on Thursday and continued through Friday and Saturday, was part of a nationwide demonstration against economic hardship in Nigeria. The suspects were paraded by the State Commandant, Mohammed Lawal-Falala, at the command's headquarters in Kano on Saturday.

According to Commandant Mohammed Lawal-Falala, the 108 suspects were apprehended at various locations based on reliable intelligence gathered by the NSCDC's intelligence and investigation units. The suspects were found with various items in their possession, further implicating them in the destruction of public property.

Notably, Lawal-Falala revealed that the suspects hailed from diverse locations, including neighboring states within Nigeria and even the Niger Republic. He emphasized the critical role of the NSCDC as the primary agency responsible for safeguarding the nation's vital assets and infrastructure.

“We have been working assiduously to arrest the suspects and recover the stolen properties,” Lawal-Falala said, noting that the suspects allegedly vandalised and looted facilities at the soon-to-be- inaugurated Digital Industrial Park, belonging to the Nigerian Communication Commission.

Commandant Mohammed Lawal-Falala disclosed that the recovered items from the suspects included various looted goods such as LCD television sets, executive chairs, door and window frames, and drawers.

Additionally, the Commandant listed other recovered items, including road demarcation iron shields from a dual carriageway and a 50 KVA Mikano generator, which was stolen from the streetlights in Dorayi Quarters, Gwale Local Government Area.

The Commandant stated that the suspects will face legal action and be prosecuted in court once the ongoing investigation is concluded.

“I want to restate my stance that the NSCDC Kano command under my watch is committed to protecting lives and property in the state,” Lawal-Falala said

Commandant Lawal-Falala issued a stern warning to scrap buyers, cautioning them against purchasing stolen goods, and announced that the NSCDC is collaborating with other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure the recovery of all looted properties and items stolen during the protest.
