Algerian boxer Imane Khelif wins Olympic medal amid gender eligibility controversy, while the sport achieves historic gender parity at the Paris Olympics.
Imane Khelif, a 25-year-old Algerian athlete, has triumphantly secured a medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics, overcoming intense scrutiny surrounding her gender eligibility.
Khelif's victory in the quarter-finals of the women's 66kg bout on Saturday, where she defeated Hungary's Anna Luca Hamori with a convincing 5-0 score, guarantees her a minimum of a bronze medal.
This achievement marks Khelif's second win at the Paris 2024 Games, solidifying her position to win at least a bronze medal, despite the controversy surrounding her participation.
Khelif's opening bout on Thursday against Italy's Angela Carini ended in unusual circumstances, with Carini withdrawing from the fight after just 46 seconds, visibly distraught. This unexpected turn of events reignited the contentious debate surrounding gender identity and regulations in sports, sparking comments from high-profile figures like Donald Trump and J.K. Rowling, who falsely claimed Khelif was a man or transgender, further fueling the controversy.
Imane Khelif faced intense global scrutiny after the International Boxing Association (IBA) alleged she failed an unspecified gender eligibility test for women's competition last year, leading to her participation being called into question.

Rowling, who falsely claimed Khelif was a man or transgender, further fueling the controversy.
Despite having competed in IBA events without issue for several years, Khelif and Carini found themselves embroiled in controversy. The IBA, a Russian-dominated organization with a history of disputes with the IOC over judging scandals, leadership decisions, and financial issues, has maintained secrecy regarding the tests, highlighting its longstanding lack of transparency in its operations, particularly in recent years.
“And this is the clear definition of a woman. There was never any doubt about them being a woman.”
In 2019, the International Boxing Association (IBA) faced the unprecedented penalty of being barred from Olympic participation due to its prolonged disputes with the IOC. The IBA, headed by a close associate of Russian President Vladimir Putin, subsequently disqualified Imane Khelif last year, citing elevated testosterone levels as the reason. However, the organization has refused to disclose further details about the tests, deeming the process confidential and maintaining its veil of secrecy.
"What we see now is that some want to own the definition of who is a woman," Bach added. "And there I can only invite them to come up with a scientific-based new definition of who is a woman, and how can somebody being born, raised, competed and having a passport as a woman cannot be considered a woman?
“If they are coming up with something, we are ready to listen,” Bach added. “We are ready to look into it, but we will not take part in a sometimes politically motivated cultural war.”
Imane Khelif is set to secure a minimum of a bronze medal in her second Olympic appearance, improving upon her quarter-final exit at the 2021 Tokyo Games.
In the semi-finals on Tuesday at Roland Garros, Khelif will face off against Thailand's Janjaem Suwannapheng, a silver medalist at the 2023 World Championships. Suwannapheng caused an upset earlier by defeating defending Olympic champion Busenaz Surmeneli, just before Khelif's own victory.
Meanwhile, two-time Olympian Lin is poised to claim her first medal on Tuesday if she emerges victorious against Bulgaria's Svetlana Staneva. Lin cruised through her opening bout against Uzbekistan's Sitora Turdibekova, setting herself up for a potential podium finish.
Despite the controversy surrounding their participation, Imane Khelif and Lin have been met with overwhelming support and applause from the spectators at the North Paris Arena, receiving only positive and encouraging reactions from the crowd.
“What is going on in this context in the social media, with all this hate speech, with all this aggression and abuse, and fueled by this agenda, is totally unacceptable,” Bach added.
Due to the smaller field at the Paris Olympics boxing tournament, which has the lowest number of participants since 1956, boxers have a unique opportunity to secure medals with just two wins.
In boxing, a unique aspect is that two bronze medals are awarded in each weight class, ensuring that all semi-finalists secure a medal, regardless of the outcome of their next bout.
The Paris Olympics mark a historic milestone for boxing, as the sport achieves gender parity for the first time, featuring an equal number of male and female participants - 124 athletes in each category. This significant step forward comes just 12 years after women's boxing made its Olympic debut, highlighting the progress made towards inclusivity and equality in the sport.
