Teen's Lung Bursts After Vaping 4000 Puffs in 2 Years
Following two years of 4000-puff vapes, a 17-year-old girl's lung bursts.
A 17-year-old girl, Kyla, nearly died from a ruptured lung caused by excessive vaping. Her father, Mark, shares their harrowing experience to warn others about the dangers of vaping and encourage young people to quit before it's too late.
A 17-year-old girl's lung ruptured due to excessive vaping, equivalent to smoking 400 cigarettes weekly, prompting her father to rush her to the hospital for urgent medical attention.
Mark Blythe got a frantic call in May informing him that his 17-year-old daughter Kyla had collapsed and turned blue at a friend's house during a sleepover, leaving him in a state of panic.
Kyla had assumed her vaping habit was safe until she suffered a sudden and devastating lung failure caused by a ruptured pulmonary bleb, a tiny air blister resulting from her heavy e-cigarette use.
After experiencing a terrifying near-cardiac arrest, Kyla underwent a grueling 5.5-hour surgery to have a damaged portion of her lung removed, a crucial procedure to save her life.
Kyla spent an additional two weeks in the hospital before she was finally able to return home, a long and challenging extension to her recovery journey.
Mark said, “It was terrifying for me I've cried like a baby. It was horrible to watch. I've been with her the whole time.
“It was life-threatening. It really did threaten her life because she was so close to having a cardiac arrest on that Saturday (May 11).
“They said she went blue. They thought she'd gone.”
Kyla started vaping at just 15 years old and has since escalated her habit to a staggering 4,000 puffs per week, equivalent to smoking 500 cigarettes daily, a dangerously high amount with severe health implications.
Following her harrowing ordeal, Kyla has developed a deep-seated fear of vaping, recognizing the grave risks it entails and the devastating consequences it can bring.
Kyla said, “When I was 15 it started becoming a popular thing. All my friends were doing it. I just thought it would be harmless and that I would be fine.
“Everyday I would use the 4,000-puff ones and I would go through them in about a week.
“I honestly thought they were harmless and wouldn't do anything to anyone, even though I had seen so many things. about it. I just feel like everyone has same view.”
Mark, shaken by his daughter's brush with death, is now on a mission to warn other young people about the dangers of vaping, urging them to ditch the habit before it's too late.
Her dad said “I've been to hell and back with Kyla over the last couple of weeks.
“I just put it down to vaping, they can't put it down to anything else but vaping that's caused this.
“She was at a friend's house and I got a phone call at 4am that she had collapsed and gone blue. I went round for her. We took her down to the hospital.
“Her lung collapsed this time due to the hole. They put a drain in her. She's a little girl who doesn't like needles. She screamed. She was close to having a cardiac arrest.
“They rushed us into Newcastle and she had the operation on Tuesday. It was a five-and-a-half-hour operation. She'd had a seizure on the operating table.
“I was talking to the surgeon and he was saying about these blebs that can form on the lungs.
“They think it is the throw away vapes that burst these blebs and puncture hole in your lungs.
“Apparently it's a big thing now. He's done a lot of operations like this.”
