Police Deny Holding #EndSARS Protesters, Tell Shehu Sani

Police inform Shehu Sani that there isn't a single #EndSARS protestor being held.

Police deny holding any #EndSARS protesters, contradicting Shehu Sani's claim. Force spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi says no one is being persecuted for participating in the 2020 protests, but reports suggest student Dare Williams is still in prison for his involvement.

There are no #EndSARS protestors in any of the Nigeria Police Force's (NPF) detention facilities, according to the NPF.

The force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, stated in a statement on Sunday that “nobody is being wrongly persecuted for participating in the EndSARS protest.”

In October 2020, Nigerian youths took to the streets in various parts of the country to protest against the abuses and excesses of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit that was later disbanded due to the widespread outcry and demands for reform.

Several state governments imposed curfews during the height of the protests in order to maintain law and order, and numerous demonstrators were taken into custody in cities like Lagos, Rivers, and Ibadan.

Speaker Shehu Sani, a former senator from Kaduna Central, requested that President Bola Tinubu release detained #EndSARS protestors during a June 12 banquet commemorating 2024 Democracy Day.

“The Nigeria Police Force categorically denies the recent allegations made by Senator Shehu Sani at the 2024 Democracy Day Dinner on June 12, 2024, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, where the former Senator falsely claimed that some young people have been detained since the 2020 EndSARS protest,” the statement reads.

“For emphasis, no one anywhere in Nigeria is under police detention or being wrongly persecuted for participating in the EndSARS protest.

“The issues surrounding the protest have been debated, researched, and documented, and lessons have been learnt. We have forgiven ourselves and moved on.

“We urge the public to disregard this claim and remain assured of our commitment to upholding justice, the rule of law, and human rights.

“We encourage verifying information before making public statements to avoid harm and incitement.”

Adejobi's assertion, nevertheless, that no #EndSARS protester is being held in custody or faces legal action for taking part in the demonstration, could not be totally accurate.

According to reports, Dare Williams, a student at Lagos' Federal College of Education, Akoka, is incarcerated in a Kirikiri medium prison as a result of his involvement in the demonstration.

Williams reportedly posted a video of a police officer drenched in blood on his WhatsApp TV platform on December 22, 2020, which led to his claimed arrest.

Williams is being prosecuted, nevertheless, for allegedly plotting a heist.
