Lawmakers summons NNPCL Chief Mele Kyari and the oil firm over the $72 million misappropriation.

House of Representatives summons NNPCL Chief Mele Kyari and oil firm over alleged $72 million misappropriation. Committee on Public Petitions investigates diversion of De Coon Services Limited funds, invites Agip Oil management and Ministry of Petroleum officials to testify on June 20.

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has called Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum business Limited (NNPCL), to testify about the purported diversion of $72 million that belonged to the oil business De Coon Services Limited.

Senior Agip Oil management and other figures from the Federal Ministry of Petroleum have also been invited to attend.

They are asked to personally appear before the committee on June 20, Thursday.

A petition from the non-governmental organization, or NGO, Centre for Social Justice, Equity and Transparency, or CSJET, prompted the lower parliamentary house to launch an investigation.

Philip Agbese, the deputy spokesperson of the House, officially submitted the petition to the chamber for consideration.

Pursuant to sections 88 and 89 of the constitution, the committee has initiated an investigation into the allegation, as stated in a summons issued on June 10.

“You are hereby required to note Sections 88 and 89 (c) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and appear in person before this Committee on Thursday, 20th June, 2024 at 2.00 pm or so soon thereafter as the Committee shall direct,” the summon reads.

“Venue: HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ROOM 429 (NEW WING) You are to submit one (1) softcopy and ten (10) hard copies of your brief on the matter.”

The committee warned that failure to appear may result in the case proceeding and being decided in their absence.
