Emefiele Printed N684.5m With N18.9bn — EFCC
EFCC to charge Emefiele with a new offense after it was discovered that “he printed N684.5m notes with N18.9bn.”
Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), is the target of a new accusation brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The anti-graft agency charged Emefiele with 4 counts, alleging that he approved the printing of N684,590,000 notes at a cost of N18.96 billion.
The EFCC alleged that when Emefiele implemented the naira swap strategy during the government of former President Muhammadu Buhari, he broke the law with the intention of harming the people.
Also, the agency charged that the former governor of the CBN had illegally approved the N124.8 billion withdrawal from the federation's consolidated revenue pool.
Maryann Anenih, judge of a federal capital territory (FCT) high court, will arraign Emefiele on these counts on April 30.
This represents Emefiele's third active criminal case.
Emefiele was charged with 6 counts of procurement fraud on November 17, 2023, and he entered a not guilty plea. The charges were brought before Hamza Muazu, a judge of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) high court.
20 counts that allegedly involve criminal breach of trust, forgery, conspiracy to conduct forgery, procurement fraud, and conspiracy to commit a felony have been added to the original charge.
The former CBN governor and one Henry Omoile, an apex bank staffer, were also charged by the EFCC on April 8 before Rahman Oshodi of the special crimes court sitting in Abuja.
The EFCC also charged the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on April 8 before Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offenses Court in Ikeja, Lagos, for an alleged N2.8 billion and $4.5 billion fraud, together with one Henry Omoile, an executive of the Apex Bank.
