Following Dana Air incident, FAAN Reopens The Runway In Lagos

THE public and all interested parties have been informed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) that runway 18L/36R has been reopened for flight operations at approximately 8:00 p.m.

This is stated in a statement that was issued on Tuesday in Lagos by Mrs. Obiageli Orah, FAAN's Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection.

The runway was previously closed on Tuesday morning owing to an incident involving a Dana Air aircraft, registration number 5N-BKI, that overshot the runway during its landing sequence, according to Orah.

She said that the FAAN emergency response team moved quickly to remove the aircraft from the scene and evacuate the area.

Comprehensive clearing operations were then carried out to guarantee that there was no Foreign Object Debris (FOD) on the runway that would jeopardize flight safety.

She said that after a comprehensive evaluation of the runway surface by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) and the FAAN Operations division, it was determined that operations could resume.

In this regard, a suitable Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) has also been issued.

“We acknowledge the area affected by the overshoot was significantly muddy.

“A concerted effort was made for the thorough and efficient cleaning of the area to facilitate the swift resumption of operations on Runway 18L/36R.

“FAAN wishes to express its gratitude to the traveling public, our airline partners, and all stakeholders for their patience, understanding, and cooperation during the temporary closure.

“We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this incident may have caused.

“Ensuring the safety and security of our passengers, staff, and airport operations remains our top priority.

“FAAN is committed to providing a safe, secure, and efficient air transport environment for all users of our airports.”

The authorities were grateful to everyone for their understanding and unwavering support.
