Godwin Kabaka Opara, a trailblazing legendary who pioneered and revolutionized the world of Highlife music, passed away on March 21, 2024, as announced by Derda Promotions.
Derda Promotions' Chief Operating Officer, Ammarachi Anyanwu, made this announcement in a statement.
Kabaka was a talented and beloved guitarist and songwriter who gave countless admirers endless joy with his highlife tunes.
These are five things about the late highlife artist Godwin “Kabaka” Opara that you may not be aware of:
- Kabaka, Dr. Sir Warrior, Dan Satch Opara, Nathaniel Ejiogu, Prince Ichita, and others founded the Oriental Brothers International band following the Nigerian Civil War. 39 studio albums, 7 compilations, and 4 extended plays were all issued by the group.
- Kabaka was born in Ngor Okpala, Imo State, at Umuawara Umuoye Imerienwe.
- Kabaka won a silver disc award for his popular song “Mangala” and a gold disc award for his album “Five Fingers.”
- The Kabaka International Guitar Band was founded in 1977 by Kabaka as a result of unresolved conflicts inside the Oriental Brothers' band. Kabaka started The Kabaka International Guitar Band in 1976 as a solo endeavor. Afterwards, he teamed up with The Imo City Band.
- The late Rex Jim Lawson had a big influence on Kabaka's highlife music.
Kabaka made a spectacular return in September 2023 with the publication of his album “The Return of Kabaka,” supported unwaveringly by Derda Promotions.
