Alex Otti's election as the governor of the state of Abia was upheld by the Supreme Court on Friday.

The lead judge, Justice Uwani Abba-Aji, held that the appellants had not demonstrated a material non-compliance in their appeal.

Regarding Otti's membership, the appellant had argued that, at the time of the election, the Labour Party (LP) had not lawfully nominated and sponsored him. The appellate court, however, determined that the membership question is an internal matter and is therefore outside its jurisdiction.

The appellants were criticized by the supreme court for bringing the appeal before the court, characterizing it as pointless and vexatious.

Alex Otti defeated PDP candidate Okey Ahiwe, who received 88,529 votes in the early election last year, with 175,466 votes.
