THE MOVIE "GANGS OF LAGOS" IS A MOCKERY OF OUR TRADITION, ACCORDING TO THE LAGOS GOVERNMENT
The Lagos State Government has voiced its concern with the producers of the "Gangs of Lagos" film/series for what it called "cultural distortion" and depicting the state's culture in a disrespectful manner.
In a statement issued by the state government, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Ms. Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, stated that the Ministry, as the regulating authority and guardian of Lagos State's culture, saw the film/series as a parody of Lagos' heritage.
Earlier, Prince Uthman Shodipe-Dosunmu of the Apesinola Eyo Oba Alakete Pupa Okalaba Ekun, a cultural organisation, criticized the video and demanded that it be withdrawn immediately.
The film, according to Shodipe-Dosunmu, is "racial profiling, sacrilegious and absurd trash."
However, the commissioner conveyed her displeasure with the film's promoters. Jade Osiberu and Kemi Akindoju for their portrayal of the Eyo Masquerade as a gun-wielding villain while dressed in full traditional garb.
Akinbile-Yussuf emphasized that "the Eyo Masquerade is also employed as a symbol of honor for significant historical events."
"It signifies a sweeping renewal, a purification ritual to usher in a new beginning, a beckoning of new light, acknowledging the blessings of the ancestors of Lagosians."
Lagosians are not gangsters, according to Eyo custodian Shodipe-Dosunmu.
