NIGERIA IS PLACED ON THE UK'S "RED LIST" FOR THE RECRUITMENT OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS
A few days after the World Health Organization (WHO) made changes to the Health Workforce Support and Safeguard list, the United Kingdom updated its guidelines for hiring medical professionals from other countries. Nigeria has been added back to the red list of nations in England's recently amended code of practice for the foreign hiring of health and social care professionals, which means "no active recruitment is permitted." Nigeria, along with 47 other countries—mostly African nations—including Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Senegal, Zimbabwe, and others—are now on the no recruiting list according to the updated WHO workforce protection list, which has now been endorsed by the UK government. The UK Home Office says that if the UK and a partner country establish a government-to-government agreement, it will limit UK employers, contracting bodies, recruitment organizations, agencies, and collaborations to the provisions of the agreement. The nation will be placed on the Amber List, and only the conditions of the Agreement will allow for recruitment.
As government-to-government agreements are struck, the red and amber country list may be modified as needed. All agreements will take into account the WHO's recommendations for the creation of bilateral agreements. Before conducting any recruitment drive, it is advised that employers, recruitment organizations, agencies, collaborations, and contractual bodies review the red and amber nation list for updates. This comes after a law requiring Nigerian-trained medical and dental professionals to work in the nation for at least five years before receiving a full license last Thursday passed second reading at the House of Representatives.
