Medvedev's frustration boiled over early in the deciding set when he repeatedly bent down to punch the court after slipping 0-2 behind, but the Russian recovered to seal victory and keep his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals alive.
Up next for Medvedev is French qualifier Adrian Mannarino, who caused an upset by knocking out eighth seed Jakub Mensik in the last 16.
Alcaraz survives dramatic tiebreak to reach Vienna last eight
Carlos Alcaraz booked his 60th tour-level quarter-final appearance with a hard-fought 6-1, 7-6(11) win over Nikoloz Basilashvili in the second round of the Erste Bank Open in Vienna.
The world No. 3 and second seed produced a match of two very different halves inside the Wiener Stadthalle. He raced through the opening set in just 29 minutes, reeling off seven straight games from 1-1 with typically explosive all-court tennis. Basilashvili, the 34-year-old Georgian ranked No. 95 who had reached the Almaty final the previous week and won 14 of his last 17 matches, then found his range. He broke back to erase Alcaraz’s early advantage in the second set and forced a tense tiebreak.

In a dramatic 13-11 tiebreak lasting more than 20 minutes, Alcaraz saved four set points three of them while trailing 1-4 early and converted his fourth match point after earlier squandering three of his own. The one-hour, 41-minute victory extended Alcaraz’s remarkable streak to 23 consecutive wins at ATP 500 level and marked his 30th hard-court triumph of the season.

Next up for the 23-year-old Spaniard is a quarter-final against seventh seed Tommy Paul, whom he leads 7-2 in their head-to-head. Paul advanced earlier with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 demolition of Luciano Darderi. Alcaraz had previously beaten Basilashvili in both their prior meetings (Roland Garros 2021 and Madrid 2022), never dropping a set.
