Top seeds Harri Heliovaara and Henry Patten advanced to the US Open men’s doubles semi-finals for the first time in their careers, defeating Guido Andreozzi and Manuel Guinard 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 in the quarter-finals.  

With all seven top seeds reaching the last eight, the draw was set to get tougher and Heliovaara and Patten felt it. They lost their first set of the tournament and were pushed to tiebreaks for the first time before coming through.  

Both teams held serve comfortably at the start of the first set. Andreozzi and Guinard did have to save a break point in the 10th game. That proved decisive, as Heliovaara and Patten let a 6-4 lead slip in the tiebreak and lost it 9-7, giving the seventh seeds the opener 7-6.  

The opening nine games of the second set mirrored the first, with no break points on offer. Game 10 brought the drama again. The reigning Wimbledon champions faced three match points but survived, and drew level at 5-5.  

A tiebreak was needed again, but this time Heliovaara and Patten dominated. They forced four straight lost service points from Andreozzi and Guinard to take it 7-3, sealing the second set 7-6 and forcing a decider.  

Having survived that scare, the world No.1s raced away in the third. Up 3-2, they won every point on the next two return games and held easily to close it 6-2 in 30 minutes. The set was a sprint compared to the 2hr 20min match, as they completed the 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 win.

In the semi-finals, Heliovaara and Patten will face fifth seeds Christian Harrison of the USA and Patten’s fellow Brit Neal Skupski.
