Erling Haaland fired 10-man Manchester City to a controversial 1-0 win over Manchester United, stopping Michael Carrick from becoming the first United boss since 1913 to win his opening two league derbies against City.
The 199th competitive Manchester derby was billed as a thriller, but the first 20 minutes failed to live up to the hype and were surprisingly quiet.
The game sparked into life midway through the first half after a coming-together between Fernandes and Foden, with the United captain seeming to strike out at Foden while he was down.
In a twist reminiscent of David Beckham’s red card against Argentina at France ’98, it was the City player who saw red. Foden was dismissed for a petulant two-footed kick into Fernandes’ stomach.
City boss Enzo Maresca said pre-match he wanted his team to “embrace the chaos,” and Foden’s dismissal ensured they got it. The midfielder became the first City player since 2006 to be sent off in a Manchester derby.
The Red Devils couldn’t make the most of the numerical advantage, though they nearly did on the stroke of half-time when Rashford’s 25-yard free-kick struck the post with Donnarumma beaten.
The woodwork was rattled again five minutes after the break. This time it was Kobbie Mainoo whose 25-yard effort beat a diving Donnarumma but came back off the post.

Despite all of United’s pressure, it was 10-man City who struck first.
The goal was mired in controversy. Haaland’s finish from Josko Gvardiol’s cross was initially flagged offside, but after a VAR check he was awarded it despite Enzo Fernandez being in an offside position and failing to touch the ball.

After going behind, United offered little in reply. Aside from a Bryan Mbeumo header and a long-range effort from Fernandes, they rarely tested Donnarumma. City saw it out to extend their unbeaten away run to eight games and move level at the top of the Premier League.
